PURDUM and variants

Looking for PURDUM, in particular John born circa 1779.

I`m newly subscribed to you list having just learned of an ancestor who possibly came from this area.

John PURDUM is in Hexham, Northumberland, England in the 1841 census aged 62 and born in Scotland, he has children with him indicating he had been in England for at least 26 years but quite possibly longer, it`s the 1851 census that points me towards Scotland, but unfortunately, not a county. A search on the I.G.I. indicates the surname is strong in Dumphries and also in Roxburgh. Hence my posting here.

The information I have is as follows.

Isabella born circa 1826 in Newbrough, Hexham, England, is my direct ancestor. I have her in every census in England apart from 1851 and 1881. Could she be visiting family up here in Scotland?
