!841 lookup
« on: Tuesday 05 September 06 19:30 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm not sure what information or indexing there is on the 1841 census but can anyone find:

Joseph Smith, age rounded down would have been 40 - (actual age 45)

His wife Mary - age about 32
Children Margaret 10
George 6
William 2

There may also be another older brother to Margaret called Andrew.

He was a husbandsman in the 1851 at Ratcheugh farm, Longhoughton. His children were all born on farms in the Alnwick, Bolton, area so I presume he'll be in a similar area in 1841.

Thanks in anticipation

Tessy.

They are all there with Alice, aged 7, and Andrew, aged 12 at Chapel House Lane, Alnwick. Joseph is an ag lab. (George is 5 not 6).
Ref: HO107/828/1
No extra info beyond Alice.

Thank you Richard   ;)

You've confirmed my hunch that there was an older brother who I happened to find on the 1881 living in Newcastle as a publican in Pudding Chare, but whose children all had the family names and surnames as christan names.  I think I have Andrew in the 1851 living at Newton on the Moor - working as a footman for a wine merchant. I've never come across Alice though - but then Joseph's mother was called Alice! Presumably she must have died before the 1851 - or perhaps at 17 she had left home. Need to do more digging - Do you have the 1851 and can you find Alice?

Does it by any chance give a place of birth for Andrew and Alice?

I also live near Alnwick so I'll have to track down the street.

Thanks again

Tessy

The 1841 census doesn't give a place of birth; it just says whether they were born in the county where they live (and all were).

Alice is alive and well in 1851:

HO107/2403/148/11
Whickham, Durham
Alice Smith, 17, house servant (to a widow), b West Bolton, Northumberland
