"Buck and Bell" Banbury

Does anyone have any inforamtion on the Inn.  It was located at 39 Parsons St in Banbury and my GGGG grandfather was landlord there for some years.  I want to find out if it still stands and under what name is has now.

A quick bit of Googling reveals the following:

1)  39 Parsons Street, Banbury - now an Indian restaurant!

2)  Buck & Bell pub now located in North Bar, Banbury.

In Kellys 1852 Directory of Oxfordshire, there is the following entry for the Buck and Bell Inn:

Inland Revenue Office, Buck & Bell Inn, Parsons St, Mr James Freegard, Supervisor.

In the 1882 directory, it is listed as Buck & Bell, J Hopcraft, 39 Parsons St.

By 1890, the landlord is listed as G Jeffery.

I bought a fab book on Banbury but gave it to my Mum for Christmas.  When she gets back from her 4 weeks in Spain, I'll borrow it back off her!

The Buck, as it is now known, is certainly on North Bar.  It recently had a make-over and now appears to be quite trendy.  It's located where Parsons Street meets North Bar/Horsefair.

Ok, I checked one of my other books, 'Banbury Past & Present'.  It doesn't have a photo of the old Buck & Bell, but does state that the North Bar site of the current Buck & Bell was previously Stranks' Restaurant.  "Beyond Stranks' a gateway provided rear access to the Buck & Bell at 39 Parson's St".

So the original Buck & Bell must have been at the top end of Parson's St and backed onto Stranks', where the new Buck & Bell was built in 1935 "after the old pub in Parson's St was converted into two shops".

I walked down Parsons St today and am pretty sure that the old Buck and Bell is now split into two restaurants - the Raj Tandoori and the JayPur Balti House.

It's a black and white timbered building above the shops, there's a small picture at http://www.placetoeat.co.uk/rajtandoori.htm where you can just make it out, and another at http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Europe/United_Kingdom/England/Oxfordshire/Banbury-317429/Restaurants-Banbury-BR-1.html

This would fit with a connection to the rear of the new Buck and Bell.
