hi there, this is a real long shot but i live in a very old pub in sussex and engraved into an upstairs and downstairs window is what looks like
E Newnman/newsam/newham ventriloquist 1878
have looked on census records to no avail to find who this chap is ,just wondered if anyone has any info on him.
the pub used to be a coaching inn and upstairs rooms were hotel so suspect he was a travelling entertainer,any help or advice appreciated,elaine

did you know that you can search the 1881 census on ancestry simply by occupation?

There's a candidate on there. Occupation:     Ventriloquist
