Many thanks for everyones help,  Katherine was born in Brighton (never Registered).  Hard luck story of my search for family ties.  I have resorted to DNA testing to try and get passed her!

I am sure that is her on the 1841, curses that they did not give more information.  Where was the Frenchman!

Remember there's a possiblity that he was English, just born overseas.  He's born about right for the tail-end of the Napoleonic wars.  By 1871, I see a Francis Winters, b. France in London, a wireworker in a lodging house (RG 10/120 folio 46 page 11), in St. John the Evangalist, Westminster - and he's listed as a British Subject.

(the age here is a bit off as I think it says 64, though).

I'd suggest checking the army overseas birth registers (they're online at 1837online ).
