Old Nottingham photographer
« on: Thursday 28 September 06 04:46 BST (UK) »
I have a photograph of a relative in what I understand is dress Hussar uniform complete with sword and holding a busby with a short white plume.

The photograph was taken in studios in Nottingham by Geo.  Pendry FRPS,  38 Long Row Nottingham.

Could someone, possibly with old trade directory access, tell me over what period this photographer was operating from these premises.  This info may help identify the young soldier.

I'll have a bit of a poke around for you Terry  :)  It might help if you could scan the photo and show us what it looks like.  The kind of photo and mount might give us some clues as to date.

Meanwhile, you could do worse than to post a scan of your photo onto the Armed Forces Board - they might be able to help narrow down the dates based on the uniform.

Hi again Terry,
I had a look at the England census and the first time George PENDRY appears as a photographer in Nottingham is 1881.  He is aged 33 at that time, and there is no George PENDRY, Photographer, aged about 23 on the 1871 census.  He is still practising in 1891 and 1901, so that should help you - at least it is no earlier than about 1880-ish (although as to PENDRY's business location, I can't say).

Thanks very much Prue

Posting on the military board is a good suggestion as it could also give me the regiment name.  Alas I have to humbly confess to the lack of a scanner, but I will try with the help of a friend.

Regards, Terry

HI Terry,
Glad I could help  :)
The alternative to scanning is to take a digital photo and post that, but if you can't do that then give the friend's scanner a go.  I'm sure the armed forces folks will be able to help you with ID-ing your man!

hi terry
I'm researching Geo Pendry and was wondering if you could post that picture of your relative.

I found him in Kellys 1895 at Long Row and some members of the family living at Lamartine Street.

There is also a piece in the Nottingham Evening Post 1931 stating that about 1924 his business was taken over by Messrs Morgan & Co of Aberdeen. The manager was a Walter Mills who eventually took it over from them.  The article is mainly about Mr Mills death but it shows the business was still in Long Row up to abt 1924.
