Chapel Members Lists?? COMPLETED
« on: Friday 29 September 06 22:25 BST (UK) »
Hi

Does anyone know whether Baptist Chapels kept 'member lists'?  If so, would any survive from the 1840s and where would they be kept?

Regards
Sandie

Yes they did keep lists of members - when they joined and when they left, if they emigrated etc...  Unfortunately they were usually kept by one of the deacons and many have been lost.

Hare (Pembrokeshire and Glamorgan), Stanford (Glamorgan), Hodgson (Lincolnshire and Surrey), Sugden (Keighley and Worcestershire), Griffiths (Kidwelly and Glamorgan), Collins (Kidderminster), Evans (Cwmavon), Mainwaring (Llanedi and Cwmavon), Rees (Neath), Jones (Resolven), Paddison (Neath), Davies (Crynant), Bevan (Tonna).

Have you thought of trying the local archives? My husband is the secretary of our chapel and has ensured the lists are safe by depositing them at Swansea archives.

Eleri,

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll contact the Records Office, see if they can point me in the right direction.
