Missing from 1901 census
« on: Saturday 30 September 06 19:54 BST (UK) »
Gertrude Carver, born in Hull in 1883 appears nowhere in the 1901 census. Oddly, neither does her husband-to-be, George W Houseley. The couple married in 1907 but can anyone suggest any strategies for finding them in 1901?

For George, one possiblity is the Boer War, if he was old enough to be in the army.  Others are that they weren't in England at the time (family connections to Scotland at all?), that they were in hospital or prison and were listed using only initials, or that they're simply listed under some particularly impressive mangling of the name.

Is this possibly yours in Hull? Looking at freebmd, George W is listed as 'George Walter HOUSLEY' at marriage, and his birth was 1880, both of these Sculcoates district:

Thomas Housley, 50
Harriet, 49
G Walter, 21
John, 13
Eliza, 11

With Houseleys being a bit thin on the ground in Hull, that is almost certainly George (or Walter). Thanks. Gertrude is probably present somewhere with a mangled name but up to now it has defeated me

Thanks for the contributions. The 1901 census image for William & Matilda Carver was one of my starting points in genealogy because John was my grandfather and the only picture of him I have is of his gravestone as he died young (in 1939) when my dad was 12. It's the elusive Gertrude whose whereabouts in 1901 puzzles me. As I have details of her marriage and (now) of her husband's family, perhaps I need not be too concerned about 1901, but as I am sure all on here can appreciate, to have a loose end like this is rather annoying. Apart from anytihing else, I might be able to discern something from where she was at the time.
