Rapley
« on: Monday 08 November 04 01:27 GMT (UK) »
William Rapley and his wife Mary Hersey lived in Ockley, Surrey. They had twelve children born in Ockley.
In 1853 they migrated to New Zealand on the "Minerva"
I have got a near full tree of them except for a son Michael, born 1830.
It seems he did not come to NZ. There is no mention of him in official records, and he is not mentioned in family memoirs.
Some of the descendants claim he left the ship in Australia , but shipping records show the Minerva came here direct with no stops on the way.
I have not been able to find a death record for him before they left England.
Does anybody have an interest in this family? Can anyone help me?
Jack.

Hi Jack,
I had a look through the West Surrey Burials CD for you and could not find a death recorded for Michael.
I have a passing interest in the Rapley family as a Rannay Rapley married into the BRABY/BRAVERY family (married William BRABY 1822 Capel) and were in Ockley and surrounding areas for many years.
Sorry that's not more helpful.  Have you tried FreeBMD?

I have just stumbled across this thread.

I see you both mention Rapleys in Ockley. I too have a link with this name and this area starting with Richard Rapley born about 1753 in Oakwood.

He had 6 children - at least 3 of which were born in Ockley and one who was married in Capel, Surrey in 1803. As I am a direct descendant I have some of her detail, but very little of her siblings.

I do not have a "Michael" or "Rannay".

Hi & welcome to Rootschat!

If you want any look-ups for Dorking, Capel, Oakwood etc for your Rapley's, let me know as I have the PR's for those parishes.
Were you aware that a Rapley (forgotten his name) was a leader of a gang who terrirised the Shipley area in the 1800s?  They were known as the Shipley Gang!

Hi - i have a Rapley in my tree as well.

All I have is a Fanny Rapley, marrying James Longhurst on 19th April 1831 at Capel. Fanny was born in Capel - that's all I know !

They had a daughter called Sarah born in 1832.

Does this tie in with anyone else?  I would really appreciate learning more about who Fanny's parents were plus any more history !!

cheers - Darren, in a very cold East Grinstead.

Hi Darren & welcome to Rootschat.  Hope East Grinstead has warmed up since you last wrote :D

Can confirm the marriage you mentioned.  From Capel Parish records (1653-1840)
Fanny Rapley spinster married James Longhurst bachelor 19/4/1831.  Witness, Edward Rapley.

Baptism:  Faney (sic) Rapley 17/7/1803 d/o William

Marriage:  William Rapley, bachelor,
 married Ann Worsfold, widow, 6/4/1795

Baptisms for the children of William.

James Rapley 20/5/1798 s/o William
William Rapley 10/3/1800 s/o William
Faney 1803 (as above)
RANEY 9/2/1806 d/o William
Edward 22/4/1810 s/o William

Although it never mentions the mothers name, I'm sure it's Ann as there were no other Rapley's in Capel at that time having children.

Burials:
Edward Rapley 29/3/1720
Name unknown 1/4/1770 'a child of Jos'
James Rapley 11/1/1818 'james of Ruggs 4 months'
William Rapley 17/11/1828  age 66
Ann Rapley 5/2/1837 'of Dorking'

So, it looks like we have connections  :)  Fanny & Rannay were sisters! As I mentioned in the earlier posting, Rannay married William Braby/Bravery in Capel 1822.  Rannay died in 1863 Capel.

The witness at Fanny's wedding would have been Edward, her younger brother.
If I can be of anymore help, just let me know,

Jane

Jane - this is great, and many thanks for letting me have this info.

It's always good to make a connection with someone and to push things back another generation.

East Grinstead was even colder this morning! Apparently, nearby Redhill got as low as minus 8 !

All the best,
Darren

Hi Darren,
Remind me not to go to Redhill brrrr..... :o

If you want anymore help, I'll be glad to do look-ups as I'm researching the same area, Dorking/Capel/Abinger etc. You never know, we might be able to push back yet another generation!
