Help ! Hotten family from London/Cornwall to SA
« on: Monday 02 October 06 02:19 BST (UK) »
Hi. Am trying to locate my father's family,  HOTTEN,  arrival in Oz.

I know they came from Probus and surrounding parishes in Cornwall, Eng. and that my father's Cornish grt.grandfather William Hotten and wife Maria (nee Cowling) born c1805 moved to London (Clerkenwell/Islington area) by 1861.. but by 1881 have disappeared from UK census.

BMD shows their son Henry and wife Mary Ann Underwood had a child Alice Lawry Hotten in London before July 1873. I suspect they travelled to SA (?) as this is where the family settled - between July 1873 and Sept 1874 but am not sure.
I am especially trying to get info on my grandfather WILLIAM CAMDEN Hotten who i presume to have been born in SA with possible birth date of 15 Sept 1874.

Am in Scotland and finding very little on my father's paternal side after getting some good info on his maternal family (also Cornish) > parkyn/trescowthick/plumstead <

thanks for reading this .. Anna

Funnily enough I am trying to find information on a Jessie Maria Hotten who married Francis Shand. I suspect she may be a daughter of William and Maria Hotten.

Your John Camden Hotten was originally born as John William Hotten at 42 St John's Square, Clerkenwell, London. (b 12/9/1832) He was a publisher and bookseller and after a visit to the USA began publishing American authors often without a licence (I think Mark Twain tried to prosecute him). It would seem that he had a good, if rather unscrupulous, eye for business. He obviously did qute well and began publishing pornography and texts about flagellation! After his death, his publishing house was bought by Chatto and Windus. I think he may have died after eating a pork pie in 1873.
