Birth Quebec 1811
« on: Wednesday 04 October 06 10:11 BST (UK) »
Looking for info on Harriet Redstone born 1811 Quebec Canada.

Her mother would be Margaret Redstone or Buckley.

They returned to England and can be found on the 1841 Census.

No father listed in 1841, Margaret is a widow.

Harriet married before  1837 so no marriage certificate available.

Any help welcome.

- linking to previous thread, although it seems you've at least made a bit of progress since then.

Where does the 'Redstone' come in? Is this an indication that Margaret married possibly Mr Redstone and then Mr Buckley?

Did you have any luck with the parish register search from the DevonFHS?

Come home and I have access to Origins now, so I'll add that there's one Redstone in East Stonehouse, he's there in 1851, 1861 and 1871, I can only see the images for the latter two:

1861, East Stonehouse:
William Redstone, 37, b. Dunerton
Elizabeth, 31, Plymouth
Hannah, 5, Plymouth

The origins scan is bad on this so I can't make out his occupation.

1871, East Stonehouse:
William Redstone, 48, Labourer b. Dunerton
Elizabeth, 41, tailoress b. Plymouth
Hannah, 18, dressmaker b. Plymouth

http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/Dunterton/DuntertonBaptisms.html - William seems to be one of three illegitimate sons of Mary Redstone.  This may be a red herring but seeing as he is the only Redstone in E. Stonehouse in the censuses I thought it worth throwing in for you.

Resurrecting an old post in case the person is still interested:

From the Drouin Collection:

Québec (Anglican) (Québec (Anglican Cathedral Holy Trinity church))

Harriett, daughter of John Hooper Redstone, private soldier in the Royal Newfoundland Regiment of Fencible Infantry and of Margaret, his wife, was born January the twentieth and baptised February the third, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred eleven by me, Salter Jehosophat Mountain, officiating minister at Quebec.

Present: John Hooper Redstone, father
Margaret Redstone, mother, proxy for Jane Redston
William Woodlands, godfather
Lucy Tilmar(?), godmother

This Harriet was the second daughter named Harriet born to John and Margaret. There is also a burial in the Drouin Collection which indicates that a daughter named Harriet was born 28 Sep 1809. That Harriet was baptised and died on 9 Oct 1809 and was buried on 10 Oct 1809. The entry was recorded in the same parish as the other Harriett's baptism by the same minister.

Here is a link to a website that has information on the Royal Newfoundland Regiment of Fencible Infantry and their participation in the War of 1812:

I am descended from Harriet Redstone (b1811) the eldest surviving daughter of John Hooper Redstone (1781 to c1838).  After his capture at the Battle of the Thames in 1813, he joined the US Army and started another family in New York State providing his new relations with a back story that covered up his past.  As far as I can tell he then went on to have three daughters and two sons.  The elder of the two sons was involved in starting a Utopian socialist community in California and the younger ran for President of the USA in the 1888 election. Harriet's mother, Margaret, returned to England and remarried presumably thinking her husband had been killed in his last battle or died in captivity. Quite a colourful family.

I have more information that I would be interested to share with other descendants of John Hooper Redstone.
