Hi Keith

I couldn't find them on the Cambs FHS index either! They're indexed, understandably, as Donington

David

Hi ScRopper,
Thanks very much for looking that up for me!  I wonder what those letters after his name represent...
I don't suppose you could have a quick look in the 1861 Census of Linton to determine whether he was still in charge at the Collegiate School, or indeed whether the School was still functioning 10 years later.
Very many thanks,
keith

and David,
Did you mean that his family is transcribed as DONINGTON on the 1851 Cambs FHS Index?

Hi Keith

Yes, they're in the Cambs FHS index as Donington

In 1861 they were in Rickmansworth, Frogmore House where John was the principal of Frogmore House School

John Dorrington head marr 41 b Henham
Jemima Dorrington  wife 32 b Rickmansworth
Catherine K Hicks niece unm 26 Housekeeper b Henham
Thomas Dorrington  son 15 b Linton
Herbert J Dorrington  son 9 b Linton
Rosalie J Dorrington  dau 4mths b Rickmansworth
+ servants & pupils

Just having a look at Linton to see what happened to the Horn Lane school

David,
This is great!  Trying to discover as much as I can about Mr Dorrington and his educational excellence, as I find it strange that he attracted so many pupils of well-to-do parents to Linton - from quite distant places, including London in most cases.  I suspect some kind of strong religious connection, perhaps...
And yes, I'd be most grateful if you can spot what has befallen the Horn Lane Collegiate Academy without him in 1861.
keith
p.s.Posts just crossed - fascinating to see he's got even more hieroglyphs after his name!

David,
Talking to myself now, but could the first lot of letters (MAFLSH) stand for Maths, Art, French, Latin, Scripture and History....

Hi Keith

There doesn't appear to be a school at all in Horn lane in 1861. Just half a dozen houses with about 24 people compared to just the one entry in 1851 with about 40 people. Possibly the school occupied all the houses in the lane and packed the kids in!
