Plaque in St Marys Church, Nottingham?
« on: Wednesday 11 October 06 10:28 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone!

My GGGG Grandad, John WORSDALE was a famous astrologer in his day and my mum recently received a letter from her cousin stating that in the 1940's when he was stationed in Nottingham, he went to a Church (he thinks it was St Marys, High Pavement, The Lace Market, Notts) and there was a brass commemorative plaque for a WORSDALE, believed to be a John.  He was told by an interested churchman that WORSDALE had been an esteemed Astrologer in his time and showed him some examples of his work.

Now, here is where I need some help.  I live in Bristol and lack of funds means I am unable to visit Nottingham to have a look for this plaque myself, we also don't have any family or friends in the area we can call on to help.
Does anyone visit this church?  can they recall seeing such a plaque?  It may not even exist anymore but it would mean so much to me and my family if it could be found it and what it says.

Or does anyone know of another way I can try and trace it?  Would it be worth writing to someone at the church and hoping they can help?

Any help greatly appreciated
Lena

You could try this site -

http://www.nottshistory.org.uk/articles/tts/tts1928/itinerary1928p4.htm

I've only skimmed it but may have something there.

Will keep looking and if you want, next time I'm in Nottingham I can pop into St Mary's and have a look for you...

Hi ya,

If you are ever in the area and it isn't out of your way to pop into the church, then that would be fantastic, it would be very kind of you and greatly appreciated.  :)

Thank you for the links, they made for very interesting reading.  Fingers crossed the plaque may still be there?!

Thanks again
Lena

No worries.

If you'd have posted this a couple of days ago I could have looked yesterday when I was in Nottingham!

It'll probably be next week now if that's ok, have made a note!

I had a quick look when I was there today, but failed to spot the plaque. Perhaps I just missed it. I would suggest that you either e-mail the church via  parishoffice@stmarysnottingham.org  or ring the parish office on 0115 9472476. St Marys has its own website at http://www.stmarysnottingham.org/ which might be of interest too.

I have researched Lincolnshire cunning-folk for a book that I`ve written, and have much information about the Lincoln wizard, John Worsdale, and his son (also John) - the wise man of Lincoln. If you are interested, get in touch. (I`m not very technically minded + new to this site, so don`t know how to send private messages).
