Anthony Maughan
« on: Wednesday 11 October 06 23:09 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for info on Anthony Maughan, my Gr Gr Grandfather.
Born about 1835, I think in Mayo or Sligo, but not sure.
He was a farmer with several sons, including my Gr Grandfather Charles  born 1862 who emigrated to Derbyshire England.
Any help would be appreciated

Hi clogdancer,
http://www.failteromhat.com/
doesn't have an Anthony in Griffiths Valuation list (around 1850s).
If any of Charles' brothers were born after 1866 and you have their names and birth years- you might be able to get a birth certificate through Irish registration
best wishes

Hiya clogdancer,

The Mayo Valuation took place in 1956-7. I would not worry too much about Anthony not appearing in the Valuation. You think he was born about 1836 so his parents may have been born about 1810. They were probably still living when the Valuation took place so the farm would have been in either the name of Anthony's father if he was still living or his mother. There were not too many Maughan's in Mayo so it might be a good idea to see if you can find some information about them and come forward from that time to see if Anthony fits into the picture. You have a couple of possible counties but you need a townland as well.

These are the Mayo Maughans ....

Catherine Maughan, Castletown, Lackan.
James Maughan, Cloonalaghan, Lackan.
Patrick Maughan, Barnhill, Lower Lackan
Patrick Maughan, Barnhill, Upper Lackan
Mary Maughan, Ball- Alley- Lane, Kilmoremoy
Thomas Maughan, Doonadoba, Kilcummin
Micheal Maughan, Beldergmore, Doonfeeny
John Maughan, Rathoonagh, Kilbride
Peter Maughan, Doonadoba, Kilcummin
 ...... ? Maughan, Sraheen, Ballynahaglish

Best of Luck with your search

Chris

I have found from a relative that Charles Maughan came from Ballina, Co. Mayo.
He also had a sister in America, but name unknown.
I see there is a Mary Maughan in Griffiths at Ball-Alley Lane which is in Ballina.
Can anyone suggest where I look now?

Hello clogdancer,

If you know the denomination of your Maughan family it should assist you in tracing Church records. You'll have to rely on these when researching some details of your ancestors since they were born prior to the introduction of  Civil Registration was introduced in Ireland in 1864.

Hello Clogdancer, www.leitrim-roscommon.com 1901 census lists Maughans in Ballina. Click on 1901 census enter County Mayo and Surname Maughan and you will get a list.  There are also Maughans listed for Sligo.  My family were farmers in Kilglass Sligo and moved down into Ballina to seek work I suspect many did the same.

1911 census for Ballina lists Hartes's Lane No 1 MAUGHAN - Catherine, Mary McGuinness, William Brennan (no mention of John)  No mention of Patrick Maughan in King Street in 1911 census.

Christopher's suggestion of the church records is probably your next step back.  If the family is Roman Catholic St Muredachs Cathedral is in Ballina and I obtained Baptism records from there in person they have an office set up for obtaining records (I had popped over on a Ryanair cheapy) they were very helpful.  Their telephone number is 096-70555, address Parish Office. The Pastoral Centre, Ballina, Co Mayo.   Kilmoremoy parish which covers Ballina has Baptism records from 1823.
Regards Marian

I've made a little progress by getting DNA tested on Ancestry.
I found several of my best DNA matches in Mayo having the surname Loftus, in particular Martin Loftus apparently born in 1825 in Ballina (according to my matches' trees) , father Owen Loftus.
I also found LDS records for Anthony Maughan & Honor (Honoria?) Loftus as parents for Margaret (b 1866 in Ballina) and Thomas in 1868.
Can anybody help me link these records?

Looking at the image of the birth cert will show exactly where they lived

The next step was to find which parish the Townland was in but I'm having trouble with that bit  :-\
