Roxburgh
« on: Tuesday 09 November 04 15:07 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
Just started trying to trace the Roxburgh arm of my family tree. The details I have are
James Roxburgh b 1868 d1939m 1)Annie kenyon Douglas m 2) Jessie Mathilde Lindsay, (James was born at D(orH)onoch Cottage, Galston, Ayrshire)

James Roxburgh (1868-1939)
Father = James Roxburgh
Mother = Mary Donaldson
Siblings= Agnes, Jean, Joanna, Mary and  John

Any ideas where would be the best place to look next? I haven't done any Scottish research before....does the census etc cover Scotland too?

Hiya AH,

Welcome to Rootschat.  ;D

Scotland is the best place to research!  Personally of all the UK it is by far the easier - but I am completely biased.

In general the census is the same in Scotland as in England and Wales. The LDS have not published the 1881 online  :-\ but I have it and have looked up your family.  More in a moment...

THE website is http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

On here you'll find BMD for statutory registration for pre-1954 deaths, pre-1928 marriages, and pre-1903 births - All post 1855.  It is a pay per view site but not hugely expensive a minimum of £6 but one cert = £1.20 (better than £7 in England).

All the OPR are indexed but not the images - they (in my opinion) are over priced to order the image - you often don't get much more info.

It also has the 1881, 1891 & 1901 census pay perview.  You can get 1881 look ups here - quite a few of us do them.

Back to your family... ;D

Is this them?

There is a Galston conection and the sibling names are correct but not the wife - could it be a second wife?

Where did you get James juniors mothers name?
Also James' place of birth differs.  But otherwise a good connection - What do you think?

Thankyou very much!!
I think that seemes quite possible. The information on James (junior) mother comes from my Gran. She knew I was interested in my family history and before she died, wrote down what she could remember. I have never checked any of it before, I just have a piece of paper with her handwritten notes. She gives all the same names but in a slightly different order and has Mary Donaldson as James'swife. Her notes read

'James left home after quarrels with his brother John. James added his mothers surname to his own. His father and Uncles were in the provisions trade and his two cousins Thomas and James used to visit us when they came to Manchester. They had a warehouse in London'

James (junior) was her dad and in 1901 was a policeman in Manchester.
I'll try the site you mention!

Thanks once again!

Hello
I'm fairly certain the first list of Roxburgh's tie in. Especially given the occupation of Grocer. It may be that james senior re-married after James junior?
Also where is Barony. I tried to look it up on Streetmap which gave a list of options but  I wasn't sure which one? Is Barony very small or a suburb?

Hiya,

Check out Genuki it gives a description and tells you how hard it is to see it on modern maps!

Not sure if AH is still around (I have sent a PM) but I think that we are related.  I just discovered (last night) that James Roxburgh (b 1836) was my great-great grandfather!

Pam,

I think that AH missed a bit from the 1871 census.  I think that James was married to Joan nee Donaldson; his mother-in-law Mary Donaldson was in their house on the day of the census.

Pam,

If the offer of the of the Roxburgh census information is still open, I'll gladly take you up on them!

I have discovered a bit more; my great x 5 grandfather was born around 1724 in Ross and Cromarty - just over the Moray Firth from Elgin!

As Mrs Roxy says - 'just in time to become cannon fodder at Culloden!'
