Schmitt, Peter & Wilhemina
« on: Sunday 15 October 06 23:41 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone knows anything about Wilhelmina (formerly Vondervelden) & Peter Schmitt, lived at 8 Ely Place, Mile End. in the late 1850's. They had sons Rudolph, (07/11/1862 born 8 Ely Place,Mile End New Town, Whitechapel) Frederick & Patrick, (I think they were born earlier). The family moved to Tonbridge Wells by 1881. I am really interested in information before 1871. I'm hoping this will help us crack our GGrandfather, Gustave Van der Velden's brickwall prior to his 1868 marriage, as they were witnesses at his marriage. We have plenty of info for after that time in our part of van der Velden family.

Is Wilhemina and family there in 1861? Sorry, I don't have access to that census.
Many thanks

Hi Sandra

They were not there in 1861.

There is a marriage in Hull in 1861
Peter Schmidt and one of the brides on the page is Wilhelmina Smets.

This looks like them in the 1861 Cencus but ive no idea if they are yours

1861-Cencus  Hull Holy Trinity
RG9/3594-88-16
Roper St

Peter Schmidt 37 head b Germany        Tailor
Minnie   " 44 wife b Portsmouth

"Minnie" is quite hard to read on the image it could be " Minnia"

We know that she was Wilhemina Vandervelden, and therefore, we are working on the theory that she was sister/cousin of Gustave. By finding where she came from, we hope to get a bit closer to his birthplace and/or other relatives. As all his records state Nassau, which isn't much help in finding his records, if they exist!
thanks just the same, for your interest.
