Farm In Holt Denbighshire
« on: Tuesday 17 October 06 16:06 BST (UK) »
How do I find if a relation back in 1850/1910 ,owned or rented a farm(70 Acres) in Holt .The census records are unclear for 1841/61,after then it says he is an employer ,but that is nothing to go by . Where would any records be kept ?.
Many thanks for your time Tsumi

Hi Tsumi

Probably your best bet would be the 'Owners of Land in Wales 1873' which is available on CD from various suppliers. If your Google, these will be shown.

Also, if you put up his details, someone may have more information.

The tithe maps for Holt are dated 1843. The apportionments will give the name of the land owner and occupier. He might be on that.
I have a copy of the maps but only the `plot` numbers are given, but I also have a few of the apportionment pages that have my Wilcoxons on.
There is a very remote chance that your farmer might be on the same page  ???
There are copies in the Records Office at Ruthin and Wrexham museum.
If you have the name of the farm and the name of your `farmer` I can have a look for you if you live too far away. :)

Hi  Thanks for replying ,the name of the farm in later years was Williams farm, but in 1841 the family name was Dutton ,Thomas Dutton and when he died 1839 his wife Elizabeth, I presume took over until her death .I would very much appreciate any input you could give me.
Cheers tsumi

On one of the pages for the area called Dutton Y Brain, there is a William Dutton, at Wern y Kendrick. a pasture, of 6 acres. The landowner is Thomas Griffiths Esq. and others ,Representatives of the late George Boscowen.
Other areas are called Caca Dutton, Dutton Diffaeth,

Not much help, but when I am in Wrexham I`ll try to look at other pages for you.

Many thanks for your very kind offer .the farm was on the Bangor Road ,Is Y Coed Lane ,Holt  The name seems to change with the census 1861/!881.
once again many thanks .
Ps your post on 1841 census ,a lot of the Wrexham and district names are missing ,also some but not as many on the 1861.

I have the map and list for this area. The plot  occupied by William Dutton is actually a long narrow strip of land, one of three that are in a bigger field. It looks like it was divided for three people to farm. There is no building on it.
The nearest building is occupied by William Barrow, decribed as a house and garden .
The closest large building is occupied by William Lee, and is described as a House, garden and fold.  I wonder if this is a clue to the name.
This is in the right area and the map actually has `to Bangor` on that road.
I know the area, I live about 7 miles away and my own family were living there in the 1800s . I`ve tried Old Maps UK, but even though the area is on the site as Isycoed, there are very few names of buildings, but my ancestral home Cornish Hall is. Once I found that I panned to the right and when you find the Nags head - that is where you are looking for.
Do you have other names, I still will try to find more for you.
