Meaning of Mol Airi- completed
« on: Thursday 19 October 06 07:30 BST (UK) »
My family came from the township of Tinure in the parish of Mullary (or Moylary) in County Louth. The Irish for Moylary is Mol Airi (with an accent over the first A). Does anyone know what this means? So far, I've got 'The upper dirty place'.

Hi,
You could try the County Louth Archaeological and Historical Society for help. You can find them at: www.clahs.com I'm sure they'd point you in the right direction!

Hope this helps,
Regards,
Briege

Mullary is an anglicised form.

Mol  is  "hub" or "pivot"

Áiri isn't an Irish word but:

airí can mean property or symptom.

Just googled 'Mullary' Co Louth Ireland & found info re-cemetry there currently.

I got a reply back from Louth County Council:

Mol = high point (mol thuaidh = north pole)
Áiri = milking place

So Mol Áiri = high milking place
