Thank you Brigcs. I look forward to hearing from you. I suppose your husband and I are very distant cousins! I have had a look at the 1881 census entry and see he was at my great grandparents' house at conington near cambridge at that time. My granny had yet to be born but her elder sister Mildred and her brother who was known as Hatton are there along with the names of servants. I have also discovered that Harriet Anne Calland, married to John Forbes Calland were actually first cousins which explains why the name Hatton occurs on two sides of my family. I happen to know that the origins of this name are from Sir Christopher Hatton, who was Lord Chancellor to Queen Elizabeth the first. Somehow the Gardners of Conington Hall are descended from him. I do have a family tree but it is very complicated going back that far. I think the fact that Harriet Anne and John Forbes were cousins explains how Emily met Philip Thomas Gardner. There is a member of the family still alive who remembers Emily, which is quite a link to history. He is very old now. Mildred's son died just before Christmas at the age of 98. As I said before the Calland branch is really a new one to me. I have tried to establish where they lived, I think my father always thought it was at the Gnoll in Neath but from the records it looks as though that was another family. As I say, I look forward to hearing from you. Wort
