« on: Wednesday 25 October 06 23:30 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me find details of a James Redpath who married an Isabella Falside and had (at least) one son, Thomas who was born around 1843 and died 1910 in Newton in Melrose Roxburghhire.  Drawing blanks on census and parish records so far
Thanks

Hi redpath

It would need more proving ....but a general  death search on SP on the married and maiden names of REDPATH and FA*SIDE of a female any age between the years of 1855 and 1910 only returns one possible.....and it just so happens her husband had been named James.

1863 REDPATH ELSPETH EASTON FALSIDE F 77 EARLSTON /BERWICK 736/00 0026

Perhaps Isabelle was a pet name for her or perhaps it just got remembered incorrectly.?  Hope this helps you find them on a census together to confirm her as the mother of Thomas and wife of your James.

Best wishes
Jean

From Jean's info on the death entry on SP, this could well be the birth entry for that Elspeth, which would also fit her age at death:

ELSPITH FALSIDE  Christening:  27 MAY 1787   Mertoun, Berwick, Scotland
Parents: Father:  WILLIAM FALSIDE Mother: APPALINA EASTON

On the issue of first names, Elizabeth, Isabella, Elspeth etc are all common Scottish variants for the same name. Have a look at this link to get some idea:

www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=Elizabeth

Regards.

Possibility your Thomas might have been born early 1841? This REDPATH family looks like a possibility in 1841 Census. Except where shown everyone born in Roxburgh County:

James, agri lab., 50
Elspeth, 50, b. Scotland
Isabella, 30, b. Scotland
James, 25
Elizabeth, 11
Ann, 8, b. Scotland
Thomas, 4months

Address: Stodridge, Makerstoun, Roxburgh

Remeber ages on the 1841 Census were supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5 for everyone over 15, children under 15 were supposed to have their actual age showing. As such, James and Elspeth above would have been born anytime between 1787-1791.

Just had a look at 1851 FreeCen. The Thomas I posted earlier is on there, however, he is showing as a grandson to the Elspeth Redpath (She is showing as born in Berwickshire so the IGI entry for a birth is probably hers).

You can see the entry on 1851 FreeCen:

REDPATH Thomas, Grnson, 10       Scholar  b. Roxburghshire - Makerstoun @    Roxburgh

Monica

Was your Thomas's wife Mary Ann?
