Nathaniel FRANCE Collector of Customs Waterford
« on: Thursday 26 October 06 00:13 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone

This is my 1st adventure into my Irish ancestry so I'm not sure where to start.

The following is a transcript from -
Naval Biographical Dictionary, published 1849

"Nathaniel Cranstoun France is son of Retired Commander Nathaniel Thomas France R.N. who died in 1835; Grandson of Nathaniel France Esq; Surgeon R.N.; a veteren who died in 1812; and Great-Grandson of the Late Nathaniel France Esq; Collector of Customs at Waterford."

I'm looking for any information on Nathaniel France Esq who was Collector of Customs at Waterford in 1700's

I know only that his son Nathaniel married in Plymouth Devon & spent his years serving in the R.N. there.

I'm unsure where the elder Nathaniel hailed from, but I would appreciate any information at all.

                                                  Kim

Hi Kim

I've found the Waterford County Library very useful.
It has a limited amount of on-line indexes as well...

Hello Kim,

I am also a descendent of Nathaniel France. Another relation of ours has done a load or research and I do have a rough family tree.  :)

Wow, have you come across Anne Hawkins? The gravestone is from Brixham, Devon. Very funny. I lived in Brixham for a couple of years and believed (at that time) that I was a Midlander and had no relation in that town.
