Hi Helen

Thanks for your quick reply.

Could you also do a lookup for George W in the 1861 census, he would have been married to Mary Jane nee Claxon then.  I am having trouble finding any information on her birth and family, and I am trying to find out if they had any other children apart from George W junior born 1864.

Thanks
Lyn

Hi Lyn

Here are the ROBERTS parents in 1861 - John W is a mystery as he doesn't appear aged 6 in 1851 and I've not found him on later Census.

I've also not found George W and Mary in 1861.  Was George W connected to Boat Building at the time of his marriage?

John ROBERTS Head Mar 59 Chelsea Pensioner Yorks Carlworth
Mary ROBERTS Wife Mar 50 Ireland
John W ROBERTS Son 16 Boat Builder (ap) Durham Sunderland

Just another point - do you have the marriage certificate?  From the information you've given George W. would have been only 14 when he married - is that right?

Regards

Hi Helen

Thanks for your help.  I believe that George W was a ships captain and he and one of his sisters, were emigrating to Australia when the ship sank, I didn't know which sister so from what you have said it could have been Mary, but I haven't been able to find any documentation on that.

The men in the family all seemed to have some shipping experience judging by the census info.

I also found that George would have only been about 14 when he married,  I am pretty sure it is the right one. Of course I could be totally on the wrong track which wouldn't be the first time. The parents names and area of birth match but there a quite a few George Roberts around, so it is something I will keep looking at.

George and John may not have stayed in Durham and gone elsewhere but I will keep looking.

Hi Lyn,

The daughter of Mary & John (also Mary) married my ancestor John Lownds. Do you have any information on John or Mary Roberts? I understand Mary was a Mary McGrath from Ireland.
