Does anyone have a plan of the cemetery?
I have a great aunt buried there and would like to plan a visit.
Very many thanks.

There's a website with MIs for Llanbadarn Fawr churchyard - the old bit. They are probably earlier than you are looking for but might have some info. If you go to Llanbadarn Fawr's parish page on Genuki, there's a link. I was there in September and the churchyard was overgrown in parts. I'm assuming that the municipal cemetery is the part to the north of the churchyard - well maintained. I only had a quick look there as the graves were too modern for the ones I was looking for. The graves form a sort of terracing on a very steep hill - the road at the side of the church is 1 in 4, so be prepared for some climbing. Not sure where you'd find a plan though - council offices in Aberystwyth might be able to help, possibly?

Thank you for your reply. You are correct in thinking I'm after a fairly modern grave - first family interment was 1953, followed by 1965. I will try, as you suggest, the council offices. Someone, somewhere must have a plan!
With thanks,
Fliss  :)

Hi Fliss,

there are 2 major cemeteries in Llanbadarn. The first is around the church itself, which has now been extended, further up the hill. About half of the old section is completely overgrown with brambles, ivy and other vegetation.

The Municipal cemetery is on the road into Aberystwyth, and used to be called the Borough cemetery. There is no public map, but if you call the foreman - a very helpful chap called Kevin. He has 2 reference books, one listed by name alphabetically, then another listed by grave number. He has the whole cemetery mapped on to linen sheets, and is more than happy to show you the grave.

He also told me the books are avaîlable for reference in Aberystwyth library.

Send me a PM, and I'll forward you his telephone number.

Thank you for this information. I 'struck gold' by deciding to contact the Ceredigion County Council in Aberystwyth and they've sent me a plan showing my great aunt's grave. Amazing! If only I got positive responses like that here in England! However, I'm thrilled and now just  need to organise a trip to Wales to visit it!
With very many thanks for yoir help.  :)

Just a small, personal, piece of information regarding the cemetery in Llanbadarn Road, Aberystwyth.   When I was a young clerk in the Town Clerk's Department of the then Aberystwyth Borough Council (my time - 1957-1961), one of my jobs was to keep the cemetery records.   I remember the linen books, I think there were three, and in order to ink-in people's names into the grave spaces I used to have to spread the books on the floor.   It wasn't a job I enjoyed doing, but someone had to do it!

Hello!

I enjoyed your little snippet - thank you!  :)

I know from searching burial registers myself that they can be large, cumbersome and heavy, so having to work on the floor must have been a 'back-breaking' experience!

Happy 2010.

His Fliss!   Happy New Year to you, too

The cemetery records were large and floppy, they didn't have hard covers.   They weren't particularly heavy, just cumbersome.   There was a hard-covered book in which the death was, at first, pencilled-in.   Then when the burial certificate was received from the Cemetery Superintendent - after the burial had taken place, the pencilled record was inked-in.   It was only when I then felt 'strong enough' and not particularly busy, I would get down on to the floor and do my 'burying'.   I was young, and my back was free of ache and pains!   I wish .....!

I have been to the Municipal Cemetery back in 1991. The gentleman that helped me back then walked into his archives and pulled out the very linen scroll that you are speaking of and pointed out the two graves plots there. They were two generations of my great great grandfather and great grandfather. I was greatly excited at that point as I had came all the way from the U.S. in hopes of finding something on my family.
