The Inscription "Cyril Nichlison. Croix De Guerre 1918. Prisoner. Charleville France"

A family in Queensland would like to return the bracelet to the man's family.

There is no-one of this name listed in the national archives as serving with Australia in WWI.  I tried Nicholson which is a more usual spelling. There are only 2 of these - both with second name Cyril.

Is it know that the person served in the Australian army? Could well be British. A post with some details as to where/how it was found, on the armed services board, may get more results

hello  there

I can  tell you that Charleroi was a  prisoner of war  camp  in belgium  in  WW1

I wonder  what this  braclet  looks  like
some  prisoners  made their own jewellery  out of  whatever came  to hand

regards jenn

Hi Jenn,

It was a copper bracelet and could have been made by him.

I found this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Croix_de_Guerre

It is a medal, not a bracelet. Perhpas Cyril thought he deserved a medal ... And he may well have done.

Do you think he may have made this bracelet, and misspelled his own surname?

I don't think he would misspell his own name but if he came to Australia or the US it could have been anglecised.

Hello  there

the inscription  refers  to  the Crois de Guere not  the  braclet  being a medal  surely  I am  now  confused

this  was a  medal awarded  for bravery  it  is  possible  he  may  not  be an australian  could be  a  pom  who  immigrated  after  the  war  even an american

Hi Ros

You may wish to join the Great War Forum at

http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/

There are a lot of very knowledgeable pals on there.

You could also look for his medal card at the NA at Kew.
