I've just come across another article in The Bury Times - Gosh  :o

The District Civic Society is delving into 900 years of the Birtwistle family, guest speaker is Roy Ashton who has been researching for 30 years.

It starts at 7.30 at Tottington Library and I presume it's this Monday as it doesn't give an actual date (paper was published Thurs 9th)
Wheeldon  Derbyshire & Manchester
Willshaw Staffordshire & Manchester
Wilshaw Staffordshire & Manchester
Pugh Manchester, Haston, Hadwell, Shrewsbury, Shropshire
Patrick Coventry, Warwick, Foleshill
Kelly Dronmore County Down & Manchester
Stewart  Hilsborough County Down & Manchester
Moffatt/Moffitt County May &, Lancashire

Hi, I know this is a long shot but I don't suppose you would know anything about my great grandparents William Birtwistle (known as Jack) his wife was Ivy and I believe her maiden name was Barker. They were born in Lancashire unknown year would have been around 1900-1920. They became Salvation army officers and had 3 children Warick Jeffery Birtwistle, Audrey Constance Birtwistle and Jennifer Birtwistle. That is all the information I have about them and I am hoping you'll be able to help me further.

Hoping for a reply

Hello Leanne and welcome

This site https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl shows a marriage

March 1933 Fylde volume 8c pg 171
John W Birtwistle and Ivy J C Barker.

Do you know if your great grandparents were from the Fylde area or Tottington (this thread)

This is amazing thankyou so so much. I'm very sure that's my great grandparents as I believe they died in Colchester as that's where they settled and where my grandmother settler down and that's where I am from. I will definitely check out the links. I'm not quite sure where abouts they were from so I'm not much help regards to Fylde or Tottingham.
I'm incredibly grateful this information is amazing. Thankyou so much. If there is anything else you find out please let me know. Now to do some digging with these links.

That’s good news.

There is only one John William Birtwistle showing in birth indexes - 1906.

The GRO site shows him with mother’s name Hough.
Ashton under Lyne December quarter vol 8d pg 490

This site http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/index.php covers Ashton as Tameside and confirms the name Hough.

https://www.familysearch.org  You need to register but a free to use site

Here is John William in 1911

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XW1L-S8T

With names, places of birth and mother’s names you can start going back and looking for marriages and siblings etc.

I don’t think I found Ivy so will take a look.

That was difficult   :)

Here is Ivy in 1911 - surname mistranscribed as Barper. Her parents are Thomas Leck (sometimes Leek maybe?) Barker and Margaret Warwick.

I will leave these with you and please come back if you want further help.
