BAYLISS/KING
« on: Friday 10 November 06 21:12 GMT (UK) »
I am searching for ancestors of George BAYLIS(S) and Dinah KING.

They were both born about 1824 in the Forest of Dean, and married in early 1848.

I can find loads of descendants but I am struggling to find any ancestors. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks. ???

ahhh so I have found a George Baylis with wife Dinah on the 1851 census in Lydney.

1851 - Primrose Hill, Lydney
George Baylis Head Age 26 Labourer b. Mauling, Worcestershire
Dianah Baylis Wife Aged 27 b. Epney, Gloucestershire
William King Son Aged 4 b. Epney, Gloucestershire
Thomas Baylis Son Aged 2 b. Epney, Gloucetsershire
George Baylis Son Aged 6 months b. Epney, Gloucestershire
Blanch White Lodger M. 35 Aged b. Epney, Gloucetsershire
Ann White Lodger Aged 4 b. Epney, Gloucestershire
Hannah White Lodger Aged 1 b. Epney, Gloucestershire
Ann Prise (?) Visitor Aged 14 b. Pillowell, Gloucestershire

Could this be them?  It shows George's place of birth as Worcesterhire not Gloucestershire and it shows Dinah as being born in Gloucestershire, but in Epney - which isn't in the Forest of Dean, it is actually the other side of the water.  What do you think?  The fact that the eldest boy William has King as his surname could mean that either George is not his father or that he was born before George and Dinah married so he was given his mothers name.

Hi

I have looked at the 1851 census and  it looks like Diana (Dinah) was born in Lydney and not Epney.

I have found a baptism for a possible William King that fits.

Baptised 24 Jan 1847 in Lydney, father John King, mother Diana. Residence Allaston Meen.

and for the Baylis boys

George baptised 20 October 1850 in Lydney, father George Baylis, mother Diana. residence Allaston Meen.

There is this baptism for a Thomas, right time but father listed as Thomas too.
Thomas Baylis, baptised 21 January 1849 in Lydney, father Thomas, mother Diana.

Take a look at this site it has loads on the forest of dean, marriage, baptisms, deaths etc

Hi Nicky

Many thanks for that.

I will look at that site when I next have a spare moment!

Also they cannot make their minds up as to whether they have one S or two.

Regards

Jane

hi, I am related to william king. When his mother remarried [Diana a Widow] to George Baylis , William King kept his fathers Surname. John King died very young - Williams Father died probably of T. B. about just before William was Born so he would not have known his father but George Baylis did look after him. William  when married lived in a house just up the road from George Bayliss - both places still exist.  Ivan
