Cardwell in Marton Blackpool
« on: Sunday 12 November 06 14:29 GMT (UK) »
Seeking information on the following family.

Robert Cardwell 1810 - 1872 married Jane Hardman 1814 - 1879 (buried at St Pauls Church, Marton)  (DOM 1837)
Children:- William (1838), Edward (1848), James(1843), Elizabeth (1846), John (1853), Robert (1855).

Robert (1855) I am unable to trace with any certainty - something unknown occurred with regard to a marriage by the looks of things around the 1870's.  It's not clear at all whether he was widowed extremely early or did not marry.  With so many Robert Cardwell's I am unable to find out exactly what did happen.

Robert 1810 - who were his parents? Did he have any siblings??
He was born in Little Marton and was a farmer/ Ag Labourer in 1841 and then a Grocer from 1851.

Hi Jude
The only  baptism for a Robert Cardwell at Marton I could see---
11/7/1813 Robert son of Robert and Betty Cardwell
There was a baptism for Alice Daughter of Robert and Betty Cardwell in 1809
Also a marriage in 1809 between Robert Cardwell and Ellen  Sitson[poorly written].

Many thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately this is not the Robert of 1810 that I seek.  The dates are more or less fixed as per the inscription on his gravestone that match the death cert details.  Robert was aged 62 when he died in Dec 1872.

I must add that should a record be found it would be great as St Pauls Church (where the main focus of my search has been) was only built in 1800 and the population was sparce at this time.

Thanks again

I wouldn't really  discard the fact that it could be him.Records at that time can be a few years out,he may have really thought all his life that he wasolder than he really was.Have you checked these records yourself? If not there is a Book at the record office with the baptisms in I will write all the Caldwell baptisms out for you, if you want me to , something may fall into place.

Dorothy

The thought had crossed my mind that with life as it was and ease of travel being an issue the baptism may have been delayed or even family tales mis told - when have they not been!

I dont have much time to organise myself for a trip to Preston so if you are passing I wont say no to your kind offer of course.

Hi,

I have a distant William Cardwell ancestor who I think tracks back to Marton, but I will have to check the details.

Hi Eastman

It's the William 1838 who is the direct line.

It would appear from all that we can gather - including reading between various census records - that patriarch Robert Cardwell (1810) lived and died within a stones throw of each of his sons' families in the main until the 1880's.  Even Robert's Great grandson, Richard was born not 200 yards we believe from a possible brickmakers yard run by William (1838) and his brother on Flag(ged) Causeway.  Son of William was Richard Cardwell 1879.  So the family is what you call a "smidge" local to each other.   :).  This has made them relatively easy to track.

Until you try and find Robert (1810) parents >:(.  Now as the parishes split, rejoins, splits or moves boundaries, which I still cant really get to grips with, there are a couple of possibilities.  One is shown above found by Dorothy (thanks again) and another may be a William Cardwell of Poulton le Fylde, based on supposition and naming pattern only.  You can tell I am not convinced.  The only note on the William possibility is a possible marriage around 1805-ish which would place a DOB around the 1780 mark - in theory.

Should any of this fit, sort of, to your William Cardwell I would be terribly grateful for any details you may be able to provide.

Thank you for your interest.
