Having done some more swatting up, it seems that the identifying features of a propeller are its diameter, direction of rotation, and pitch, which I think is the angle at which it slices the air, and these should give some clues to an expert on what it was designed for.
re the airport:It said on the Southern news that they were thinking of renaming Eastleigh airport but I see they've already put up a marvellous replica of the first Spitfire at the entrance. Here's another vote for RJ Mitchell.

I'm not an expert on prop's, but am interested in aviation (ex R.A.F.) so I am posting just to keep track of the thread.

P.S.  Big weekend for me, I have an airobatic flight on Sat" and the rest of the next few days will be taken up with the "Red Bull air race", I met Peter Besnyer (air race followers will know who he is) this morning, so the weekend is off to a good start.

I will have a great weekend (if the stomach is up to it).
Just noticed your interests include Dabill fromm Nott"s, it's an unusual name so I wondered if it was at all related to Dabell. A friend of mine called Dabell in Sth York's originated I believe from Nott's.

Hi Denn,

I think you told me this once before!  Yes, there will be a connection somewhere along the line;  so far I have more than 30 different spelling variants of the name!
