Thanks for the info, so are you telling me that none of the info fits my Thomas B Jones? Would be nice if it did, but like all things nothing is easy.
Thanks for all your effort. I must keep searching.

the family mentioned in reply 7 and listed in reply 13 are not the right family. The Thomas from that family is unmarried in 1891 and living with his brother John.

I'll search again for Thomas B but don't have time this evening. Sorry!

Thank you, I know that in time we will find him. I received a message from Herefordshire Archives
Dear

Thank you for your enquiry of the 2nd November 2006 regarding Absent
Voters Lists. We have the lists for 1918-19 and 1921  and I did notice
that there was information for you in the list. I also found some
information  in Kelly's Directories which you may well have already.
If  you are thinking of visiting the Herefordshire Record Office we are
closed until Monday 11th December for the Annual stocktake, or if you
would like further information sent to you,  our short enquiry service
costs £5.00 which is paid in advance of the details being sent to you.
I hope this helps you further your research.

can't find an exact match, but here are a few possibles - slight differences in age or names.
1891 44 Craig Ynisawdre Cottages, Mawr RG12/4467 folio 144 pg 18
Thomas John head mar 26 tin furnaceman b, Glam, Llanguicke
Miriam wife 23 b. Rhyndwyclydach
Elizabeth mar 1 b. Rhyndwyclydach
Thomas B son 4 months b. Llanguicke

birth reg Thomas Benjamin John march qtr 1891 Pontardawe vol 11a pg 842
Can't see this family in 1901 census.

1901 58 High st, Gorseinon RG13/5067 folio 88 pg 11
James Jones head mar 36 super(?) tin house b. Carmarthen town
Elizabeth wife 37 b. Carmarthen Town
Edward son 15 b. Gorseinon
Annie m dau 13 b. Gorseinon
William M son 9 b. Gorseinon
Thomas B son 7 b. Gorseinon

possible birth reg Thomas Benjamin Jones mar qtr 1895 vol 11a pg 975
This is actually the only registration for a Thomas Benjamin Jones in the Swansea registration that shows up on FreeBmd between 1885 and 1895 so might well be worth investigating even if only to eliminate this birth.
There are also 2 death registrations for a James Jones in Swansea district that would fit this James - june qtr 1909 age 44 Swansea vol 11a pg 511 and june qtr 1913 age 48 Swansea vol 11a pg 1001, but it's a common name.

1901 Cwm Road, Godre'rgraig RG13/5064 folio 133 pg 4
Thomas Jones head mar 41 tinman in tinplate works
Janet wife 42
Blodwen dau 15 cold rolls(?) tin works
Elizabeth dau 11
Benjamin son 9
James son 5
Johnny son 2
all born Ystalyfera

The problem with this search is that not all the details fit any one family. There's not just one tin plate works in the Swansea area at the time, there were dozens. If I remember correctly from school, about three quarters of the tinplate in the UK was manufactured in the area, so there are many Joneses working in tinplate.

I wondered whether you could get someone to check the parish registers of the church where Thomas Benjamin married just in case the wrong first name was recorded on the marriage certificate for the father.

Thanks for all the great info, I have the wedding cert, but
at that time it shows that Thomas deseased, as well as Clares father so I do not think that it will do much good, I think 1895 is too old. His wed certificate said that he was 26 in 1914 which means he was  born in  1888,
1901 Cwm Road, Godre'rgraig RG13/5064 folio 133 pg 4

Janet wife 42
Blodwen dau 15 cold rolls(?) tin works
Elizabeth dau 11
Benjamin son 9
James son 5
Johnny son 2
all born Ystalyfera

This one looks close, tinman at least making a little progress

the one in Gorseinon might have been a supervisor in the tin works - it says super followed by a squiggle which I'm hoping meant supervisor and Gorseinon is much nearer Swansea then the other two which are in the Swansea valley.

I have finally found my grandfather Thomas B Jones in the 1881 Wales Census. I looked up his father which was easier.
Thank heavens for this. A good New years present
