BICKHAMS from Ashburton Devon
« on: Friday 17 November 06 11:23 GMT (UK) »
This is just a general query. :)  Was also posted at Rootsweb.

Does anyone have any connection to Bickhams from Ashburton in Devon, England? Names include

Aaron Bickham married to Mary Ann (Ashburton 1851 census)
Samuel Bickham married to Sarah (Ashburton 1851 census)
Joseph Bickham married to Mary (Plymouth 1851 census)
and Thomas Bickham married to Rosamond (Bath Somerset in 1851 census)

All 4 men were born in Ashburton. I would like to know if they were related.

Joseph & Aaron were Ostlers, Samuel was a Tanner and Thomas was a Coach Trimmer

Thanks

Hello
I'm not related but I can see Aarron's marriage to Mary Ann Wakeham(the GRO site gives her surname on their children's births).
Plymouth St Charles the Maytr
4 May 1852
Aaron Bickham bach lab 13 Nelson St Walter Bickham wool stapler
Mary Ann Wakeham spinster 13 Park St William Wakham lab
wit William ?and  Jno Rickard

Unfortunately Samuel married Sarah Cridiford at Ashburton 12 July 1829 wit William Cridiford and Jane Dane so no clues there.

Joseph born 1818 Ashburton is baptised at the non-conformist chapel (Greet Meeting Indep)
Joseph Bickham born 27 Sep 1817 bapt 23.9.1818  s of Walter and Jane Bickham
marriage at St Charles the Maytr to Mary Found 18.6.1848
Joseph bach ostler Old Town st Walter wool stapler
Mary  spins Old Town St ---   ---
wit Jane Boorman and Thomas Bickham

Walter married Jane Roberts at Exeter 13.11.1812 bot this parish and no indication of martial status  wit John Wilcocks and Robert Carter.
Jane was buried at Ashburton 11.11.1818 age 44
I can't see Walter.

Other children Walter with a Sarah- children Elizabeth 4.5.1792 and Mary 9.2.1794
Walter married Sarah King at Ashburton 4.9.1791 wit Thomas ? and James Bickham
There is a signature on both so you could have a good look and see if you think it is the same man.I don't think so but see what you think.

Thomas born 1809 married Rosamund Trimlett at Bristol 5.4.1830 although her maiden name is given as Cox on her children's birth indexes

There are two possible baptisms in Ashburton
25 .3.1803 to Thomas and Julia Bickham
or 2.2.1814 Thomas s of Mary  a weaver base child
Also on page William s of Mary a weaver base child 27 Feb 1814 so maybe  not a new born.

It looks like Aaron and Joseph are brothers and so are Samuel and Thomas.

I was born in Ashburton, but have no real links with it and have never lived there -- in 1943 you had to be born where you could be, and not where it was most convenient for your mother. Apart from driving past it many times on the A38 or on the way to the Moor from Totnes I've hardly ever been to Ashburton. A few years ago I spent about an hour looking around the churchyard (without success) for Eales graves. Anyway, in short, I'm not much help.
Cornish (Devon), Bowden (Cornwall, Devon), Kitson (Devon, not North Lancashire), Karslake (Devon), Eales (Devon), Churchill (Dorset -- no known connection with Sir Winston), Duncan (Ireland), Colclough (Ireland, not Staffordshire), McMurtry (Ireland), Browning (Hampshire, Dumfries), Heberden (various), Rogers (Thurlestone, Devon)

Hi
If you look at Ashburton Digital Archive, you will find a lot of Eales graves.
