I think they were just written in quick shorthand rather than the recognised codes, Forfarian....

Ruskie is good with Scottish stuff!

What are DMS, KBT and WGT?

According to my Genealogical Research Directory, and to Wikipedia, the Chapman Codes for Dumfries-shire, Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire are DFS, KKD and Wigtownshire are DFS, KKD and WIG.

So where do these come from?

Um, can't remember. I started this post in Nov 2006 and my memory is fairly poor.  ;) I like DMS KBT and WGT though.  ;D Seriously though, I either got them from a site somewhere or maybe I made them up because Dumfriesshire, Kircudbrightshire and Wigtownshire are such long names?  :-\

I think you're right about the first bit Monica, but not sure about the second (but lovely of you to say so.  :-*)

Thinking about it, we can now also add to the areas for free census resources:

Possible.

Yes, I have noticed that.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
