I found this free census very useful:

www dumgal.gov.uk historicalindexes default aspx

see

www.dgcommunity.net/historicalindexes/default.aspx

(could have saved some pounds on SP if I'd discovered it earlier!)

There are quite a few sites with extracts of various census in Scotland.  It's worth checking the different county boards as we've posted them in each county.

Freecen is also a growing resource for Scottish census.

The site does work, but I had to go to the mainsite first and then search for historical indexes
www.dumgal.gov.uk
Researching the names, Healy, Breen, Dingley, Daly, O'Connell
Places : Mallow , county Cork, Dublin, New York and other US states
For the Netherlands, Kalishoek,Mulder, van der Vos, De Koning and more

I've seached and got lost in the dumgal site and can't find the link to the information I posted all those years ago. Maybe Kalishoek would be kind enough to point us in the right direction.  :)

Thanks very much Monica.  :) I have no idea why I couldn't find it when I looked last time. I will add that to my favourites.

What are DMS, KBT and WGT?

According to my Genealogical Research Directory, and to Wikipedia, the Chapman Codes for Dumfries-shire, Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire are DFS, KKD and Wigtownshire are DFS, KKD and WIG.

So where do these come from?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
