What happened to Harriet?
« on: Saturday 25 November 06 12:06 GMT (UK) »
It's horrible out today, so for those of you who would like something to do, would you like to have a look at a mystery that's been baffling me for ages?

Harriet Brock was born 15.3.1853 in Gt Yarmouth to George William and Elizabeth. The parents are in the '41 and '51 censuses, but I can't find any of the family in the '61 census. In the '71 census, George is a 56 year old widower in Westminster with an older daughter, Catherine, and a  25 year old (ahem) boarder, Mary Ann,  whom he was to marry two years later. Harriet is not there.

Can't find a death or a marrige for Harriet. No census record elsewhere.

Any ideas what happended to Harriet, Rootchatters?

As always in these requests, if we know who (when&Where) appears in the 1841/1851 we may have a better chance of spotting them later on.

Can you supply the transcript(s) from the census that you already have?

Hi Meles,

Like Newfy the only person I could find was George Brock 1861. Are you sure that Harriet did not die. There is a death registered in Norwich of Harriet Brock June 1854 4b 81

                                 Regards

Thanks, Geoff, for that idea.

I have trawled through FreeBMD and the actual death records from 1853, but can find nothing. She does not appear in the '71, '81, '91 or '01 censuses, so I'm a little doubtful if the 1954 death is hers. There is a little clan of (unrelated, as far as I know) Brocks in Norwich.

I'm inclined to think she got married or died before then, but can find nothing to support my guess.

Hmmm  ???

well, they were well hidden in 1861 - all combinations of names and linking to spouse names / parents names just based on christian name and PoB/DoB search didnt tease them out !

I think just from FreeBMD that the Charles from 1851 (also) died young ....

Thanks for that, Newfy. I'm pleased you're finding what I did (or didn't). I thought I was missing a trick. Now I'm just missing half the family!

I'm not sure what happened to Charles either!

If the death you found was Q1 1861, I have the death certificate, and it's the first child of son George: poor little thing died at two weeks old.
