Hi Brian
I suppose that because he was in South Africa, could be a good chance that he might have been a mariner?. There is quite a few James Dye's born around the same time, and a few of them are mariners, looking at the census's. I couldn't see a James with a wife called Emma on any of the census's. The only ones that there is are all born 1840 or after and married about 20 years after that.
