A Greatwood problem
« on: Thursday 30 November 06 10:56 GMT (UK) »
I havefound a death for Jemima GREATWOOD Q1 1846 Birmingham district.
I know she was married to John GREATWOOD(b Kings Norton) and both are together on the 1851 census in Birmingham
I cannot find a death for John
I cannot find her on the 1861 census.

There is an added confussion as there is a John GREATWOOD from Birmingham living in Kings Norton with wife Emma this couple are on both 1981 and 1861 censuses

Can anyone suggest how I can find at least Jemima on the 1861 census?
Her name has been spelt Jemima, Jamima, Jemma, at various times and I have tried as many variations as I can think of

Any help will be welcome

Hi CatOne
oops Yes her death was q1 1870 they married in 1846 she should be on the 1861 I've tried all the tricks in the trade even left the surname out and tried for all Greatwoods no given name
She really is elusive.  ???

I now have John remarrying Elizabeth Rushton in 1871 and they are on the 1871census he has lost 7 years but is still a Fender Maker Journey man which ties in with all other sightings  Elizabeth is on the 1881 census with children from 8 down she is a widow Needless to say I cant find a death for him 1871-1881 ugh! so both John and Jemima should be on the 1861
Help

Hi Trees
I don't know if you have found this or not but there is a death registered For a John Greatwood in K.Norton 1878
Thought it might help eliminate one of the Johns.

Celia

P.S. I just remembered i forgot to add his age ::) he was 53

Hi Celia,
Yes thank you I have now found that death  his age is given as 53 and Elizabeth his second wife is a widow on the 1881 census so I'm fairly confident to accept this death as my John GREATWOOD.
I just wish I could find him and Jemima on the 1861 census and Jemima STANFIELD on the 1841 census
She is my big headach at the moment :-\

Do you have the marriage certificate of Jemima and John? So we know what father to look for in 1841? Cant find her yet, only one Stanfield in Birmingham that I could see, fathers a Hawker and the girl nearest in age to Jemima is a Mary!  :-\

Hi Catherine,
No I don't have the STANFIELD/GREATWOOD certificate as my line is through an illegitimate daughter (Ann Maria) of Jemima before this marriage We Know Jemima was herself the illegitimate daughter of Ann STANFIELD daughter of Thomas STANFIELD and his wife (hooray a legitimate family ;D Susannah nee GREEN they had 5 children
I haven't come across a Mary yet and wonder where she fits in. A Susanna married in the same district in the same quarter as Jemima and I can't find her on the 41 either its very strange ??? I suspect she is going to be another grand child of Thomas/Susannah.
I think my gt..Gran is with them on the '51 census using the name GREATWOOD she married in 1860 aged 17 using the STANFIELD name. I think I need to look at school records to see what name she was using on the registers After her husband died Ann maria used the STANFIELD name again, which again is strange isn't it? I want to follow Jemima as best I can as she is of course direct line and I think I have a death for her in 1870 so she should be on the '61.
