Emigration to Australia
« on: Saturday 02 December 06 12:56 GMT (UK) »
I'm a complete beginner to the Australian emigration business, and don't know where to look. We are searching for a Lucy Bywater from Beeston Nottingham, who was one of 3 sisters who went overseas in the early 1900s to teach/help with lacemaking etc. The first 2 went to USA and we have found some of their details, and think they came back, but we think Lucy went to Australia and stayed.
Any help/tips gratefully received. Thanks, Margaret.

Hi,
there are lots of possible ways to help in your search, but we need to know more about Lucy if you can.  Her age and parents' names and occupations woulld be good.
Meantime, here are a couple of Miss Bywaters coming to Victoria which may be of interest.

Bywater, Miss ,23  in 1911 per Orvieto  from British port.
Bywater, Miss L. A. 22 in 1912, per Demosthenes, from Brithish port.

I can see no trace of Lucy in the Victorian BDM indexes which cover
births 1914-1920 (mother's maiden name is recorded in index)
and marriages 1914-1920,
and deaths 1914-1985.(parents names recorded in index if known by informant)

I do not have access to the later marriages which go to the 1940s.

I have just checked the Victorian Marriage Index 1921 - 1942 and there is no Lucy Bywater listed.

Maybe another State?

Hi,
Here is something that may be relevant.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0yh/

It suggests [if on the right track] that we are looking in early 1920's in NSW and that the government undertook to assit these workers from Nottingham.

What do you think?

Thanks all of you for your time and interest. I'm going to do a bit more research and checking up. They were a large family, and I wonder if the story has got confused. My only informants are the widow of a deceased nephew of the sisters, and a niece.
I will get back to you if I need more advice or lookups. Could be a long job!
Cheers all, Margaret. ???
