1901 look up please
« on: Wednesday 06 December 06 09:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
 I'm afraid i don't have a lot of information.
Looking for a Charles Williamson born abt 1885 in Inverness.
We know he married a lady called Christina in 1907 in Laggon Inverness.
All Christina and Charles children were put into an orphanage in the late 20's -30's which is why we don't have any information. The children don't know what happened to the parents.
i know its not alot to go on but if anyone can help i would be really grateful.
 Lou

Hi Lou

Instead of just looking at the census, i've started with his marriage. This is what I have:

102-11

5 November 1907
Newtonmore, Kingussie. After Banns according to the forms of the Church of Scotland

Charles Williamson, fish dealer, bac. Aged 25 of 30 Brown Street, Inverness.
Parents: - Alex. Williamson (-) and Margaret Williamson (dec)

and

Christina Williamson, sp. Aged 19 of Woodside Cottages, Newtonmore.
Parents - Thomas Williamson, hawker and Catherine Williamson

Witnesses - Donald McKillop and Annie Williamson

I'll check on his birth and the 1901 now  :)

Regards

There are two births registered for a for a Charles Williamson - one in 1882 (which ties in with the date on the marriage cert) and on in 1885. Both in Inverness.

Unfortunately, the 1882 one has no image. The GROS ref is : 98-429. This might be obtained by contacting The General Register Office for Scotland:

http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk

The other one, Dec 9 1885, does not correspond to the parents given on the marriage cert. Parents, John Willaimson, hawker and Nancy, maiden surname Williamson who married Sept 2 1867, Hamilton, Canada  ???

I'm wondering if it might be worth you putting up a query on the Travellers Board on this site  :-\

1891:

GROS Ref - 98-16-4

Duff Street, Inverness

Alexander Williamson, 52, Horse Dealer, b. Rosshire, Ferrentosh
Margaret, 45 , b. Caithness , Wick
Margaret, d, 16, house servant, b. Inverness
Charles,s, 12, scholar, b. Inverness
Christina,d, 4, b. Caithness, Wick

I think this corresponds with the marriage cert details. I'll check for an older one in 1901 - no other found in 1901 in invernessshire.

Hi again Lou

Here is a map link to show you the proximity of Laggan to Newtonmore:

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0z3/

Ferintosh (where Alexander Williamson was born)  is on what is known as the Black Isle - the peninsular just to the north of Inverness itself between the Cromarty and Beauly Firths. A friend of mine lives there.

Give a shout if you need anymore on either of these families.
