Help Please - Passenger Lists 1900 - 1913
« on: Wednesday 06 December 06 12:40 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find out when my great uncle arrived in Australia.  I know he was there in May 1913 and I have been checking the passenger lists I could find online, however, the ones I have accessed do not seem to be very detailed after 1900.  Am I looking in the right places?  Any help would be much appreciated.

My Great Uncle's name was Andrew Edwin Noden.

Hi Cathy

This period in Australian Immigration is not readily available online.  The PRO of Victoria have unassisted immigration 1852-1923 but your relative is not listed there.

The National Archives of Australia have a service record for Andrew Edwin Noden, have you seen this yet?  His digitised records are available for viewing online.

www.naa.gov.au      (go to Recordsearch, then search as guest and enter his name in search window)

Hope this will help you along

Hi Cazay and Ozybob.

Thank you both very much for your help.  I have actually downloaded his service record, very interesting was thrilled when I found it.  I have also been very fortunate in finding out  about his life there thanks to a lady in a Historical Society, but this is the last piece in the jigsaw.  I do not know when he left England but have a postcard dated May 1913 written to his mother (my great grandmother).  I did wonder whether the lists from 1900 were not yet available - the search will continue.

Hi Cathy

Have you seen his death certificate? It could given information on approximate year of arrival and list which states he had lived in (this assumes the informant knew the information). May help to pinpoint his arrival. I know that in my state (Qld) there are many more shipping lists available at the archives than are listed online.

Hi Trish,

I have a copy of his death certificate but cannot see this information on it. He seems to have stayed in New South Wales but it could be he landed in another state and travelled to NSW.

Thanks for your help

Hi Cathy

I was thinking of the column headed
Where born and how long in the Australian (or Australasian) Colonies or states
- but you seem to have used this information anyway  knowing he probably came directly to NSW

Hi Trish,

On looking at his death certificate it says in the relevant column that he was in N.SW. for 17 years which means it  would have been around 1912 when he arrived (if he landed in N.S.W.).  Thanks for telling me about this column I had missed the 17 years bit on the bottom!  These certificates are more detailed than the ones in the UK.

We have to be good at something over here  ;)  ;)

If no other state gets a mention, then as far as the informant knew - that was the only place he lived in Australia.

Trish

I have a CD from the Soc Aus Gen  - and checked as it sometimes has shipping information - there was a reference to your man - but it was burial details only
9 Sept 1929 Leeton - Do you have a transcript from the cemetery? You can buy them or find someone to visit SAG office (It is in Sydney)
