Finding someone before 1800
« on: Wednesday 06 December 06 20:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Does anyone know how you go about looking for Romani ancestors before 1800?
I just wondered if parish records might hold some clues?
Thanks.

Hi Burto

Yes, I'm afraid it is a case of trawling through parish registers etc..  Birthplaces taken from later census returns sometimes hold a clue as to where a baptism may have taken place but as many travellers weren't actually baptised where they were born it can be a long job.

I have found quite a few of my ancestors that were Romanys on baptism/parish records - so that probably will help you find them.  But obviously it would help you a great deal if you know what sort of area they were settled in around this time.

Mine wasnt too bad because they were settled in East London so its just a case of finding out the church names and looking them up
