Hi Beckey,

Still in Edinburgh in 1881:

11 Arthur St Edinburgh (St Cuthberts)
GROS 685/3  ED 45 p7

Francis Balsillie Head M 45 b Haddington, Mason
Ann Moyes Balsillie wife M 39 b Edinburgh
Ann Balsillie daughter 11 b Edinburgh, scholar
David Balsillie Son 9 b Edinburgh,  scholar
Charlotte Balsillie daughter 7 b Edinburgh, scholar
Margaret Balsillie daughter 4  b Edinburgh
Agnes Balsillie daughter 1 b Edinburgh

Ann Stibbing Balsillie b 8 Sep 1869
David Balsillie b 22 Feb 1872
Charlotte Purves Balsillie b 8 Jan 1874

A Francis Balsillie married a Charlotte Purves 21 Dec 1829 in Stenton, East Lothian.  They are probably your Francis's parents.

A Francis Balsillie, Mason of Allanton, Edrom in Berwickshire died 16 June 1839.  He left a will.  The index entry for the inventory states he was the husband of Charlotte Purves.

Dear Nell & Monica,

Thank you very much for the information they are the family that I am looking for.
A lady in Australia has been trying to get details of this family for some time without much sucess, helped her with the 1851 census (Balfour Basille), but this gives her more to work on.

Thanks once again,
Barry

This is a very late response, I am afraid. My Great grandfather was Andrew Balsillie, brother to the Francis who "went missing" in 1851.

Their older brother William came out to Australia in 1851, and Francis followed in 1852. Some time later he went back to Scotland. Andrew came out in 1861 and stayed.

If you would like more information, please let me know.

Becky, came across this and in searching to find information on who it belonged to found you looking for information on your ancestry.  I was going to buy it as a little decorative object but I think it may mean more to you so I shall refrain from buying it ! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fine-Leather-Book-The-Poetical-Works-of-George-Crabbe-with-Life-1860-Engravings-/401374860554?hash=item5d73ce550a:g:PegAAOSwsXFZLX6S

Hi Ray,

The topic is on the Balsille family, I can not see a connection with the book unless I am missing something?

Regards

Sarah

I am a little confused. I am not sure why this has come to me, given that it seems to address a "Becky".
Nonetheless, the hand-written name at the front of the book, "Miss Balsillie", the date (1860) and the place, Ayton suggest a connection with one of the daughters of a brother (Balfour) of my G-G-Grandfather, Francis Balsillie.
At that time, Balfour was on nearby Dykegatehead farm, Chirnside.
I have no knowledge of his descendants beyond his own children, but no doubt there are some still in the area. I would be keen to know more, though.
Some years ago I made a video on my (Australian) branch of the Balsillie family, going back to the mid 1700s in Scotland. This might be helpful to you. It can be seen at:

Cheers

Richard Balsillie

I have Balsillies in my tree.   There were three sons, Francis Balsillie, William Balsillie and Balfour Balsillie recorded as being born to William Balsillie and Margaret Turner in Perthshire. This information was found in FamilySearch and therefore the usual care must be exercised. The remainder of my information comes from original records.

William Balsillie b 25 January 1798 in Monzie, Perthshire, Married Isabella Darg, 4 May 1828, Dunbar, E. Lothian, Died 3 April 1835, Haddington, E. Lothian

Francis Balsillie b 4 October 1800 in Monzie, Perthshire, Married Charlotte Purves, 21 December 1829, Stenton, E. Lothian, Died 16 June 1840, Ayton, Berwickshire after a fatal fall from a horse.

Balfour Balsillie b 22 September 1805 in Pencaitland, East Lothian, Married Christian Purves, 16 November 1833, Stenton, E. Lothian, Died 1880 in Whitsome, Berwickshire.

Charlotte and Christian Purves were sisters, children of Andrew Purves and Sophia Craise of Stenton, East Lothian.

Sophia Craise was my 3rd great grandaunt, sister of Agnes Craise my 3rd great grandmother.

I have information on the Francis and Balfour descendants but since William Balsillie did not marry into my Craise line his information is more limited although latterly his family moved down to Northumberland.
