Alexander Trotter born circa 1799 in Leitrim
« on: Tuesday 26 December 06 01:06 GMT (UK) »
Alexander Trotter, born circa 1799 somewhere in County Leitrim, came to Canada about 1827 (via the Canada Company) with his wife Margaret (maiden name unknown), born circa 1799 in Ireland.

With them were sons:
-  Robert Trotter born circa 1820 somewhere in County Leitrim, Ireland
-  William Trotter born circa 1821 somewhere in County Leitrim, Ireland

I don't know  if they had any other children who were born in Ireland.

These children were born in Pittsburgh, Frontenac County, Ontario, Canada:
-  John Trotter born circa 1829
-  Jane Trotter born circa 1834
-  Alexander Trotter born circa 1836
-  Mary Trotter born circa 1840

Alexander and Margaret's grandson, Beecham Trotter, mentioned in his book that the Trotters were from Leitrim.

Seeking any family or info on family who might have stayed in Ireland or emigrated elsewhere.

Thank you!
Josephine

Hi Josephine:

My great great great grandfather was James Trotter abt. 1783 who married Sarah Campbell in the Church of Ireland, Manorhamilton, Cloonclare, Leitrim in 1819. He moved his family to ON in the late 1830's, possibly 1837. His daughter Ann married my great great grandfather Samuel Carson, who was also from Leitrim, in Grey ON. There's a good chance the Trotters and Carsons knew each other in Leitrim.

I've done a bit of work on the Trotters and am thinking yours might be related. There weren't many. I think James had a brother John, and they probably lived in Tullyskeherny townland just outside the town of Manorhamilton. There was a clump of them from here.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Best,

Ray Swanson

I do appreciate you pointing it out! No doubt the Trotter headstones at Manorhamilton COI are relatives of mine.

My main quest is trying to find my Carson Leitrim origins.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Ray

Hi, Ray:

Thanks so much for your message!

Unfortunately, I don't have any information about the Trotters' lives in Ireland or any connections to a Carson family.

All I know is that, according to Beecham's book, the family came  from County Leitrim, their ship landed at Quebec and the family settled in Frontenac County, Ontario.

As adults, Beecham and his cousin Alex (my husband's g-g-grandfather) left Ontario and helped to settle the town of Brandon, Manitoba.

Beecham's book contains scant information about his family origins.

Best regards,
Josephine

Thanks Josephine:

I used to live in Brandon. Interesting.

I've had a look at what Irish records I could find, and don't see any of your relatives, mostly because the records don't usually go back far enough. The name Alexander only comes up in the Trotters from Killarga Parish who mostly lived in Altavra townland, and also Gortahork.

Looks like mine came from the Manorhamilton area, and yes, those Manorhamilton COI gravestones are my relatives.

Here are a few records which might be related to your bunch:
