I am looking for John Wood b Eckford in 1838, and his son James, born Lancashire in about 1872. John maries in Manchester in 1872 but I can't find him on the census.  I believe that son  James is orphaned by 1881 and has moved to his grandparents in Eckford. I need confirmation of this. Can't easily see John Wood in 1881, but you were right about son James  He is with his grandparents:

James Wood, head, grocer, 71, b. Eccles, Berwick,
Elizabeth Wood, wife, 67, b. Minto, Roxburgh
Annie Irvine, niece, general servant, 32, b. Hawick, Roxburgh
Willie Munsie Irvine, niece, 12, b. Glasgow
James Wood, grandson, 8, b. England

Address: Morebattle, Roxburgh, Scotland

Oooh, if it's not too cheeky, John Wood was a stonemason...might that help for 1871??

Sadly, Scotlands People, the official pay to view site, is not searchable by occupation. I've had a quick look at 1871 and there are 20 entries in John's age group but all are in central/north of Scotland, no entries in the borders.

Have you not been able to find in England?
