The London Gazettes are online and are an amazing resource especially for shipping, and particularly  bankruptcies, but lots of other information is searchable here:

I have found so many of my family members mentioned in the papers . They date fron 1752 to 1998

The Edinburgh and Belfast gazettes are also searchable from the same place

It can be slow and there are a few bugs in the system ( like early gazettes coming up as very recent gazettes) but they are working on them.
