Thank you so much for looking Evan JONEs up - it does seem like a very good start...is there any chance of finding them in later Censuses??

Thanks also for finding Thomas and Rose in 1971 - I wonder where Mary got to ..she was still alive in 1881....maybe staying with a cousin :-))

If you have had enough of this family, don't worry about any more look ups - you have been fantastic !

Many thanks again

Kind regards

Jocelyn

Hi Heywood

Good on you for finding them in 1861..this is all good news. John JONES must be over in Newport MON for 1871 - that is where he said he resided when he married in 1874.

Its odd that no one else shows up - they couldn't all have died could they? There is a Letitia death in Newcastle Emlyn in 1868 aged 53, which matches our girl

There is also a David Evan JONES aged 34 in 1881 over in PEM - b Newcastle Emlyn...

Does the 1861 give specific places of birth for the children- other than just CMN?

And I hate to be a pain, but would it be too much to ask for the names of the assistants? They often worked for relatives as apprentices and there might be a clue amongst them.

See what you have started? The clues cause more questions!!

Anyway, see how you go with the answers - this family has been so hard to trace - there is another Evan JONES draper in Cardigan almost the same age who caused a lot of grief for no good reason it seems:-))

Many thanks again

Jocelyn

Children's births easy- I can read these! St Peter's Carmarthen.

Assistants et al - perhaps a different matter. I am loathe to use transcribers thoughts as they often write nonsense. However ...
Ann Williams 25 yrs milliner   Pembroke ?? Haven (Little Haven)
Elizabeth Allan 20 yrs milliner    Carmarthen Briohfa (Brechfa)
Elizabeth Morgan 15 yrs milliner    Carmarthen Llansawell
David Davies 30 yrs drapers assistant  Carmarthen Llarnsybyther (Llandytyther)
David Morgan 20 yrs   ditto  Cardigan Silian (Selian)
David Lewis 19 yrs      ditto Carmarthen St Peter
David Jones 17 yrs     ditto   St Peter
Thomas Williams 17 yrs  drapers apprentice St Peter
William Griffiths 17 yrs drapers apprentice  Carmarthen Llydrinn
John Harries 15 yrs drapers assistant  Carmarthen (Abergwilly)
Margaret Thomas 29 yrs  house servant  Carmarthen Mydrian
ELizabeth Davies 24 yrs cook  Monmouth Hennoy (Hundy)

I have put the transcribers interpretations in brackets but I am not happy with mine either!

thanks for all that - I see at least one assistant has stayed on for 10 years- David Davies- also David Jones could be the same fellow  as in 1851....but not the son I presume

Ann Williams probably came from Milford Haven- a place where my SAIES family lived and who were drapers as well.

I must say this confounds me that the family in any form doesn't show up in 1871.

Maybe I should try MON to see if they moved there- or do you have 1871 for all shires?

Well Heywood, you have been amazing and I really appreciate everythig you have found.

Many thanks again

Cheers

Jocelyn

I checked 1871 earlier by looking for a neighbour from 1861- he was still a Druggist/Pharmacist but there were no obvious signs of a drapers in the street!

I have to say they are a bit of a nightmare - so many with the same name and as I know nothing about Welsh place names it is just too hard. You search for one name with a year of birth and there are about a hundred for the same place!

Unless it is something specific now I will call it quits and wish you the very best of luck!

Hi Kath,

fair enough I reckon! My eyes glaze over with the JONES names in the 1881 census so I do understand. What I don't understand is why the Welsh had a repertoire of only about 5 Christian names to call their kids.....:-))

Thanks heaps for what you have found. I knew the request wasn't for the faint hearted!

Cheers and happy New Year
