shipping records from Tasmania to Victoria 1855-1862
« on: Saturday 06 January 07 08:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone

I hope you all had a great Xmas and New Year and now that its all over I have finally found some time to get back to my family history after a long absence.

I was wondering whether anyone knows if records were kept for interstate travel from Tasmania and Victoria 1855-1862.My family of Pitt and Richmond at some stage left Tassie and ended up in Victoria where the poor mother lost 4 young daughters in the same year in 1861 in Melbourne. Very sad.

Hopefully someone will be able to guide me the right direction as to how the family ended up in Victoria.

Regards

Unfortunately no luck on that site.
I tried every surname possible that they might have used for my dates but the family are proving to be  very elusive.
Back to the drawing board.

Try an email to the archives - they may have some more suggestions - do you have BDM records from Tasmania?

Thanks Trish will send them an email.
I have only two  cds concerning Tassie which are -
Tasmanian Pioneers and Tasmanian Convicts
Are there and other cds available?
I have tried every surname variation I can think of and am still searching now for a birth of a Rosalie Richmond or Pemberton or Pitt. She was born about 1838. Mother Matilda Pemberton also known as Matilda Pitt or Richmond and father Joseph George Richmond. This info is taken from a marriage cert in Victoria in 1864.

Thanks for your ideas Trish I really appreciate it.

Hi troods

How's it going?  There are at least 2 other CD's available regarding early Tasmanian records. I'll check them for you at the library tomorrow.

Is it Rosetta's birth your looking for?   She was born prior to Matilda's marriage to Joseph George Richmond, so she is registered under PITT.

Also I noticed, the registration no.s on the deaths for some of daughters are very close together.  Do you have any of their certificates? Maybe they contracted something on board the ship and died so after arriving.

Cheers

Genni

Hi Genni

I think I have unravelled some sort of puzzle here with this family line.
I purchased a marriage cert of James s Hall and his 2nd marriage to a Rosalie Allison in Vic 1864 hoping i could gain some more clues etc.
Well what a surprise on the cert as it appears Rosalie's mother is Matilda Pemberton and father Joseph George Richmond. Witnesses were Matilda Ffrench and Sarah Richmond. I tell you what that totally threw me. So now it appears that Matilda and Joseph had a child b circa 1838. It just does not add up. Apparently Rosalie was a widowed in 1861 and had 1 deceased child. Rosalie died and then James married for the third time to my Rosetta.

I hope I have not confused you because at present I am confusing myself.
This family certainly used quite a few different surnames over the years.

Hi troods,
I am not sure if this refers to the same Pitt family however you may find it interesting  to read the book The Vandiemonians from penal settlements to marvelous Melbourne by Ian Morison ( 2005 Ginninderra press ACT ), which proves an excellent account of families making the move from Tasmania to port Phillip at this time.
