Photo's of Ships
« on: Saturday 06 January 07 20:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,

My friends dad has asked if I can help him with the following, this is what he has written..

"HMS Byard was destroyer escort and part of a lease lend agreement with the USA.  I was on her when she was commissioned in June, 1943.

She saw service escorting convoys in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediteranian.  In October 1943 we were attacked by a wolf pack of 16 U boats.  During the battle we sank U-841 and took 13 prisoners on board.  She was returned to the US Navy Dec. 1945 and sold for scrap in 1946.

In the summer of 1945 I joined HMS Lysander in N. Shields and then went to Singapore and Borneo to sweep mines.  I left the Lysander in Singapore and was shipped home to the UK and demobbed.

My father served on HMS Prince of Wales and was killed when the ship was sunk by the Japanees in 1941"

He would very much like to get a picture of the three ships.  Can anyone help me find them, or a reputable on line service that has pictures that you can order from?

Thanks for any help.

had a look around the net and the best one that I have seen so far is to be found at http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk it has history and pictures of the P.O.W.

can not find any picture's on the other two except some history on HMS Byard formally the USS Donaldson.

hope this helps

Hi Karen,

Have a look here:
Force Z Survivors Association website:

http://www.forcez-survivors.org.uk

There are pictures and an extensive history of the ships, one of which was HMS Prince of Wales.
We also have casualty and crew lists on this website.

If you need any more help, you can email me direct from our website contact page.

Cheers,

Andy Wade.
Webmaster, Force Z Survivors Association.

Hi everyone, thanks for the links.

Old Rowley, have you every ordered from that site?  He would like a photo that he is able to frame, not just print off the computer if you know what I mean, and I have no problems ordering off the internet.

Annie, as always, great links  :)

Andy, many thanks for the link to your site, my friends grandfather is mentioned on your site, Cecil Nankivell is his name.

My friend's dad is 82 years old now and it just amazes me the memory he has.

Hi Karen,

Your Friend may also wish to obtain a photograph of Cecil Nankivell's grave in Kranji War Cemetery.
I'm fairly certain that photography of all the graves in this cemetery has been completed by the British War Memorial Project:
www.wargraves.org.uk
(I'm a volunteer photographer for this project)
If you contact Steve Rogers he should be able to supply a copy of the photo for a small fee (which goes towards the running of the web site and database, which is entirely voluntary).

Oh, and to Liverpool Annie... many thanks for the welcome message and your kind words about the Force Z Survivors Association website!  ;D

Cheers,
Andy.

PS, I just checked and his grave has been photgraphed:
