« on: Sunday 07 January 07 07:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi there

I have just found out that my great great auntEsther Hammond formerley Lyon
died in Queensland in 1913.  I have found the cemetry but would like to find out when and why she came to Australia.  I am
now living in Perth Western Australia ( since 1968) and will fly over in March to see her grave.
Any information would be appreciated
Thanks

Free BMD has a marriage for them at Vol 1d pg 786 1863 Camberwell London Surrey.
There is a birth for a Charles Digby Hammond at Vol 1d pg 865 Camberwell 1884, 2nd quarter.
The family (several children)  are all to be found on the 1881 census RG11; Piece: 689; Folio: 111; Page: 1 living in Camberwell.
I cannot see them in 1891.
So presumably they emigrated between  1884 and 1891. There may be other children registered to them and indeed this Charles DIgby may not be theirs but it does give you a time period to search within.
I do not know about Australian emigration records. Could you perhaps check a census for relevant material?
best wishes
heywood

Hi Chellin,

If I understand everything correctly from the comments, Esther was buried in Toowong Cemetery on 20 Sep 1913?

Have you been to Toowong Cemetery before? I had a look at the cemetery map for where Esther's grave is located, and, if I've read it right, it seems to be right next to the main gates so you should have a pretty easy time of finding it.

However, if you are planning on searching out a whole lot of other sites around the cemetery, you might want to be prepared. I don't know how experienced you are with cemetery searches so I don't want to teach you how to suck eggs. But I went there for the first time last year and was woefully unprepared. It is a massive cemetery and not as easy as you think to track down plots. At the very least, you might want to talk to the people in the office first to get their advice on the best way to read the map and find the sites.

Out of 10 sites I was searching for, I only managed to track down 2. I ended up blogging about the experience. To get an idea of what it was like for me, I called the post: "Toowong Cemetery Visit: Adventures in Confusion and Dehydration"!   ;D ::)

But, as I say, if it is just the one site, it appears you shouldn't have much trouble. I just don't want you to travel all the way from Perth and not put aside enough time for your visit (like me) as it can be very frustrating.

Good Luck!
