Electoral Rolls St Kilda
« on: Sunday 07 January 07 11:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I have 2 ancestors (sisters) who emigrated to Australia from England in 1913. They died in St Kilda in 1963 and 1971 respectively - both spinsters!

The only thing I can think of which might help me learn something about them are the Electoral Rolls.

How would I go about finding them on say the 1955 Electoral Roll & what information would there be ?
All I have is the names & the address from Death certs.

Has anyone any bright ideas of other information which might be available??

Very grateful for any ideas!
Marlene

Hi Marlene,
not sure where you are in the world as yur 'home location' is not familiar to me.

I live not far from the suburb of St Kilda and may be able to describe the area they lived in if you want to give out the address.

I'm not sure that electoral rolls of the 40's & 50's will give you more than you aleady have.,or that they will even be available.
 Others will advise better.
Ar you looking for their immigration records?

Hi Marlene

Electoral Rolls as Sue says won't give you any more information than what you have.

But we can check for wills and death notices, see if they have any other information.

Were they living at the same address?  Where are they buried?

regards

genni

Hi guys
Wow ;D thanks for your responses! I live across the Ditch  and we are getting fantastic sunsets tinged with the smoke from the bush fires!
Martha Ellen & Mary Ann Fairy emigrated to Australia in 1913 on the "Makarini" giving false ages!
In 1901 Martha was a carpet sewer & Mary Ann a dressmaker's Assistant.
Until Martha  died in 1963 I have no information at all. (have the cert.)
Mary Ann died August 1971  but the friend who arranged the burial obviously didn't know her family.
They lived at 4 Irwell Street St Kilda. Both had their ashes scattered at Springvale Cemetery. I don't expect there is a plaque for either.
Unless they won Lotto I wouldn't expect a Will.
This branch is a bit of a mystery as their mother states she is a widow from 1891 onwards but I cannot find her husband William's death in England.
William's uncle and a heap of cousins emigrated to Melbourne between 1885 and 1889 and I have a suspicion William might have gone with them! Maybe that's why the girls decided to move in 1913.
I couldn't think of anything else bar the Electoral Rolls or a burial notice which might give me any clues as to what they did for 50 odd years!
I'd be most appreciative if anyone could find any gem! Incidentally any other Fair(e)ys winging their way around Melbourne  will almost certainly be mine!
Very grateful for your responses
Marlene

Hi Marlene

No worries, I can check death notices for you, but need day month year.  With regards to 4 Irwell St, St Kilda, did they own it?  If so, the house would have been left to someone.  I'll trace its occupancy backwards, see what I can find.

Who were William FAIRY's parents?

regards

Genni

Hi Genni
What a little wonder I'd be so grateful for any gem.
Martha Ellen Fairy died 11 December 1963.
Just realised the address was
Flat 4
2 Irwell Street
so unlikely they owned it.
Mary Ann (sister) was the informant & of the same address.
Martha Ellen was cremated at Springvale on the 13th.
Interestingly MA cites 40 years in Australia - I would have thought 50 unless they returned to England at some stage!
I don't have Mary Ann's cert but apparently she died 23 August 1971 & was also cremated, (on  31 August 1971) at Springvale (dates from a helpful person at the cemetery!)

Father is (interestingly ) noted as William John (which has not appeared anywhere else) I have his birth, baptism and all censii until he disappears!) A death for a WJ has just appeared on Free BMD in Chelsea where they lived - right age too so I'll have risk getting that cert before I send you on a wild goose chase for him!
Any help would be most gratefully received.
Cheers
Marlene

Hi Ozy Bob
Thank you very much indeed for those later arrivals. I'll store them away as I have quite a few contacts to whom they might belong!
At this stage I have no idea where any of them fit in as I am researching forward from my great gran who arrived in New Zealand in the 1870s.
Going backward to the 1780s was a dream in comparison!
I have claimed almost all the ones who show on  earlier emigration lists as Fairy or Fairey.
They all seemed to go to St Kilda area but I can't find anything that points to the fact that they had contact except when they died! Several are buried together so it must have been planned!
Families! Aren't they fun???
Thanks again
Marlene
