Hi Keesa,

The extracts of the Spinning Wheel Census, or Flax Growers List of 1796, shows families named Gardner in Armagh, Cavan, Derry, Down, Fermanagh, Galway and Tyrone. There were Gardiners in Antrim and Mayo.
You'll find the extracts on John Hayes failteromhat.com site.

Keesa- where in Canada did the family settle? Quite often groups of people from the same area settled near each other when they went to Canada. Have lots of Canadian Gardners (never Gardiner!) in my family but they weren't from Ireland.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks aghadowey - Evidently my Gardners settled in Glengarry County in Ontario. Although I was told that the family came from Ireland, it's entirely possible they may have originated from elsewhere. Ann Gardner, my g.grandmother may have been born in Glengarry County. According to family lore, there was a sister (name unknown) who married a Hiborn. If any connection with your Gardners would love to hear from you.

Sorry, but my Gardners were in Nova Scotia for generations- just a few slipped into Toronto area after 1920s as far as I know.
There are lots of Ontario records on-line (I've traced other families there)- newspapers, gravestones, etc. Maybe some of those records will give you some clues if you haven't seen them yet.

Hi Barbara - thanks for your reply. Ann Gardiner married my g.grandfather Robert Jackson about 1840 in Canada. I haven't been successful in finding any information about her or her family. If any of this sounds like a possible connection with your Gardiners, I will appreciate hearing from you.
Regards
Jack

Hello there, my ancestor is Matilda Gardiner, her family came from the Ashfield area of county Cavan, she was born about 1854 and married Robert Hamilton, this we know, and there is info on thir baptism site on the internet. There is some info on the LDS but that of course has to be taken with crossed fingers. I can't so far find an Ann, but there were a few Gardiner families in the area, so heelo possible cousin.. :D

I'm researching Gardners.

Margaret Gardner, my 2 x gt grandmother, was born abt 1837, Richhill, Armagh, daughter of Singleton Gardner, a blacksmith.

He had other children Thomas (married Ann Jane Welsh nee McNally), Singleton, Jane (married Robert Harvey) and Matilda (married Thomas Holland).

I have know idea who Singleton married. I believe he was the son of Singleton Gardner and Margaret Livingston.

Bye - Suffolk, Durham, Northumberland
Currie - Cumberland & Northumberland
Stewart - Durham (Isaac Stewart)
Francis - Ireland & Durham
Falla - Northumberland (Selby Falla)
Smith - Aberdeenshire (Erskine Smith)
Gardner - Ireland (Singleton Gardner)
