1891/1901 William George SILLITOE

Hi,
just wondered if I could request a look-up please for William George Sillitoe.

In the 1881 he was living with:

Annie Sillitoe (Head) aged 50yrs - Dressmaker

William.G. Sillitoe (son) unmarried aged 22yrs - Engineers Clerk

John.w.Sillitoe (Son) unmarried aged 19yrs - Solicitor General Clerk

At Wenlock Road - 9, Armoury Terrace. Shrewsbury Holy Cross Shropshire.

We have reason to believe that William.G Sillitoe was named on a birth cert as the father of Nina Victoria Sillitoe born 1887 in Walthamstow. West Ham. Essex. The birth cert might lead you to believe that Marie Mathilde Hoff, (mother) & William Sillitoe were married but as far as we know, that wasn't true? His occupation on the birth cert is given as Railway Engineer.

On the birth cert the mother is named as Marie Mathilde Sillitoe - Formerly Hoff,
(we know she was born in Alsace Lorraine France 1854 approx).
She was a Governess at Westbourne Terrace. Middlesex working for Mr & Mrs Freshfield - Solicitors. They are still a big firm in London today.

Marie already had a son called Percy Hoff, (no father named on his birth cert). Percy is my husbands Great Great Grandfather. During the 1881 Percy was in lodgings with other little boys. On the 1901 Nina was in a childrens home in Oxfordshire. There is no sign of Marie Matilde after the 1881 census so we don't know what happened to her. Family myth has it that she went to the U.S.A. She didn't take either child with her.

Sorry it's so long winded but there is quite a lot to the story.

According to FreeBMD:

Marriage, Dec. qtr. 1888

William G. Sillitoe married Marrianne Davies

Edmonton, Vol. 3a, page 484

This most certainly confirms William G. was in that area!!

Dear Pel,

thank you so much for all the information, it is much appreciated!

It is very strange that it should lead us to Shropshire as we used to live in Clive near Wem a few years ago, we are now back in East Yorkshire.

If it hadn't been for some older family members who remembered Nina Sillitoe then we would not have known about William. Marie Mathilde Hoff was never spoken about. Grandad Leonard, (Percy's son), would never talk about her so who knows what else she got up to!!

Nina was obviously part of the family as she is remembered as a visitor to Percy's house, which goes a little way to a happier ending as both children obviously kept in touch.

Nina never married.

Kind regards - JH

Hi

A marie Mathilde HOFF was born in Strabourg in 1853 (21/FEB/1853). Her father was Charles Frédéric HOFF, 30 years old and her mother Louise Caroline FLAMM(E).

I guess there are several other girls with the same name born in Alsace.

Do you know if she had siblings ? It could be helpful.
